Raiders hire Jon Gruden as Head Coach

I feel like Gruden really has no way to not assemble an all-star coaching staff, given how much research he's probably done as an analyst for ESPN and evaluating which teams/coaches do things the right way. It'll be interesting to see how things actually pan out, and that contract is insanity in terms of length. But hey, good for John!

Why? If Gruden sucks, he'll be fired, and the Raiders organization will lose a fraction of the Las Vegas revenue. It's hardly going to destroy the franchise.

Still have to pay Gruden that 10 million per year until the contract runs out. That may impact the subsequent hires (may be buying cheaper coaches).

It's going to be really interesting what happens in vegas with attendance if they suck. I don't think sales will be a huge issue as we have enough seat filler companies and I'm sure casinos will buy up a lot of tickets as comps and stuff, but I could easily see a Chargers in LA situation happening with the Raiders in Vegas.

is gruden really worth this?

From a marketing standpoint, yes.  From a coaching standpoint, maybe.  He will revive a lot of interest in the team and will probably help keep some fans during the transition to Vegas.

Mark Davis doesn’t care about his own pockets (he drives a 15-20 year old van).  So him spending some extra cash to excite the fanbase and keep butts in the stands isn’t a bad idea.  Gruden loves the Raiders and the fans love him.  It’s a good move depending on which facet of the deal you’re looking at.

Absolutely no doubt that's a financial impact, to anyone - but the Vegas move is hugely lucrative. This is an option the Raiders organization has obviously felt is affordable in the climate surrounding such a move.

I really don't think the Raiders sucking would really see much of an attendance impact. The nature of Vegas will see that there are always plenty of neutrals/road fans in the stadium in general to buy tickets anyway. But I'd guess there will still always be plenty of Raiders fans anyway; the close proximity to Los Angeles and a huge, loyal Raiders fanbase who haven't stopped supporting the team in many years of terrible teams will see that there is always S&B in the stands.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I don't view the ticket sales as an issue between that casinos and seat fillers like house seats, but  that's also what I meant by could be a charger's situation in Vegas. Lots of neutrals or opposing fans, which may suck for the players.  Either way, I'm excited to have a team here, even if I'm a niners fan. It's certainly seems to have helped property values :D

I could be wrong of course but this just feels like it's not gonna work out. He's jumping into an NFL landscape that is completely changed from when he was coaching.

It's not like he was running a B&B in Idaho. He's been around football in those years. His system is ran by guys like Shanahan and McVey. He will likely have to learn some new concepts, etc. but his work ethic has never been questioned. Nor his love for the game. He's disciplined and militant in his approach and has talented players to coach.

If he was going to a bad team with no QB, I'd feel differently. But he's got a QB and the ability to hire a staff around him to bridge some gaps.

Gruden's library of football game tape must be as extensive as any collection, with the possible exception of NFL Films.

And there is more than game tape in the FFCA compound. In another room, Gruden keeps every game plan from each of the 303 games he participated in as an NFL assistant or head coach.

On his desk in his office is his last playbook as a head coach, from the 2008 Bucs. It is one of his favorites. In his computer system, he keeps a descendant of that playbook that has evolved considerably and continues to evolve.

So, for example, when he was watching Dak Prescott tape and saw zone-stretch concepts from Dan Mullen's Mississippi State offense that excited him, he incorporated them in his playbook.

"If you ever came back in coaching, say you got Dak Prescott, I know what he did," Gruden says. "I know what Cam [Newton] did at Auburn. I have all my notes from that. I know what [Tim] Tebow did at Florida—studied the s--t out of him. I know what Alex [Smith] did at Utah."

Well, except that - again, this is something I'm not sure a lot of fans want to grasp - he's still going to go for his guys.  In other words, guys he's worked with or have worked under him before.  Gruden isn't immune to nepotism.  Even with Gruden, coaches, generally, aren't just going to reach out and hit up some guy who they have no connection to.

From the sound of the staff coming in:

Greg Olson (former Gruden OC in Tampa)

Rich Bisaccia (former Gruden ST Coordinator in Tampa)

Guenther at the moment is a bit of an anomaly in terms of connection at the moment, given that he's a Marvis Lewis guy and Lewis was actually the guy to replace Ray Rhodes (the guy Gruden came up under) as DC in Washington in the early part of the 2000's.  But it does make sense if you look at when Gruden was first hired in Oakland, he effectively outsourced the defense to long-time coach (former Vikings, Stanford DC) Willie Shaw, and was totally content to retain Monte Kiffin in Tampa.  I've always found it kind of funny that a coach from the Ray Rhodes tree had so few immediate defensive coaching connections, but then again Rhodes was the type to do what Gruden does (run his own side of the ball and outsource the other side to someone else).  Even still, I'm a bit surprised to see someone like Chuck Pagano (who at least has Rhodes/Gruden ties via John Harbaugh) or Emmitt Thomas (who was a DB coach under Rhodes and is currently working with the KC DB's) drum up some interest.
