More "concerned" about this year.....not for obvious reason that its this year.....just that, 2018 was a lost year on so many fronts and for so many reasons. By this stage of the season, we should be performing better. All the pieces have been in place now long enough to be performing better.

It's troubling that we're worse this year than the awful performance last year

In some statistical categories yes.

We're doing much better record's-wise though no? With a harder schedule. Some good facts have to be mixed in with the not so good.

World beaters? Not yet. But there's few of them out there.
Week in - week out - we've seen better teams ON.THE.ROPES. by lesser teams.

We've had two truly lousy games. Not much good to be found - but we've done what its taken to win the vast majority of our other games.

Again. World beaters? No. Got a shot? Most definitely yes.

3rd downs feel like a luck stat.

Imagine how good we will be when the pendulum swings in our favor on 3rd down

It's all comes down to Rodgers not being a bonehead.  Call a play that gets you the first down distance and execute it.  No hero ball when the situation dictates getting a first down.

Bill Huber / SI -  Once upon a time, the Packers moved up in the draft to get an inside linebacker who was supposed to be adept against the pass.

"In 2018, Oren Burks was viewed as the type of new-age linebacker that could make a major impact on the Green Bay Packers’ defense.

“I think because of his athleticism, there’s more of a need for guys like him,” general manager Brian Gutekunst said after drafting Burks in the third round. “At the same time, this is no small man now. He’s over 6-3, he’s 233 pounds, he was the No. 1 tester of the inside linebackers on our board. So, he is not small by any means for today’s inside linebackers. We think he’s very versatile the fact he can play both inside spots. We think his best football is ahead of him. The athletic gifts he has and his two years of experience as a linebacker, we think it’s all headed in the right direction.”

At Vanderbilt, Burks started his career as a safety before moving to inside linebacker. With that multiple skill-set, Gutekunst gave up fourth- and fifth-round picks to move into the third round.

At this point, it appears to be a bungled trade.

Derailed in part by injuries in each of his training camps – including a partially torn pectoral this summer – Burks has barely seen the field. As Green Bay’s defense has trended the wrong direction this season, Burks’ playing time has trended the wrong direction, too. After playing a season-high 14 snaps on defense against Oakland in Week 7, Burks has played a total of 13 defensive snaps the past four games. That includes just one snap last week against San Francisco.

“Sure,” defensive coordinator Mike Pettine said when asked on Friday if Burks could help his pass defense. “There’s certain packages and they’re up and active for this week. Sometimes it depends on what we’re getting from the opponent. Our groupings are typically based on what they put out there. We might have a group that we’re anticipating playing a lot and they don’t come out in the grouping we were working against, in particular, and that section of our defense might not get played that week. Since coming back (from the injury), I think he’s improved each week and during this stretch run he’s going to be a big part of what we do.”

Burks has played 43 snaps this season, that 6.03 percent playing time actually less than last year’s 11.47 percent. In the base defense, he’s behind B.J. Goodson. In the dime defense, he’s behind safety Ibraheim Campbell."

Andy Herman -  A Cardinals win over the Rams would be a low-key nice help for the Packers as far as clinching a playoff birth is concerned. Would give Green Bay a 3 game lead on the final Wild Card spot w/ just 4 games to go.

Don't see that happening at this point, lol. Nice thought though.

They still play: Seattle, @Dallas, @San Francisco and Arizona. No need to look in the rear view mirror.

Bertie Boatsman: A playoff birth is to be celebrated. Life is beautiful. A playoff berth is also to be celebrated. Because Packers.

I'm just happy Savage got that freebie interception.  Two interceptions is a more accurate stat for how many he should have.  The amount of times he's been a second late on an interception this year is maddening.

Also, he has not been the same since that injury.  Hell, our defense hasn't been the same since that injury.

I think it goes back further. The defense hasn't been the same since Raven Greene went out. Add to that the fact that Kenny Clarke is wearing down due to having to play too many snaps and some injuries, Savage's injury, and Tyler Friggen Lancaster playing lots of snaps, the defense has personnel problems that can only be corrected with another off-season. I think you've advocated for replacing Pettine, but I doubt there is any defensive coordinator who could put a solid defense on the field given the personnel manning the center of the defense. Tyler Lancaster, Adams, Lowery, Martinez, Campbell, etc. (even with Clarke) are a recipe for mediocrity. One major miscalculation was thinking that Adams/Lancaster could replace Daniels. They were right to let Daniels go. They were wrong thinking his replacement was already on the roster. I think the consensus on this board is for the offseason to bring IDL and ILB help. The right combination of draft choices and FAs could put this defense into the top 10. We all have to keep in mind that this is only year two of Pettine's rebuilding process. As Rodgers declines due to age and injury (he hasn't been right since his broken right collarbone and the infamous 13 screws) the identity of the Packers must change from a superstar QB playing hero ball to overcome a mediocre defense, to a team with a top ten defense and a QB playing game manager. I think that's a viable road to the Super Bowl.
