Yet they keep the high draft pics. So dump the cheap guys and keep the esspensive ones. That takes the teeth out of any of this. Terible on all counts, people mess up and the NFL made it easier for them to do so by putting the devil in the same room and leaving, and shutting the door behind them. Dumb all around.

Union should be all over this.

Quote

"According to the Lions, Williams and Berryhill's suspensions stem from betting from an NFL facility on non-NFL games. Both receivers can participate in offseason and preseason activities leading up to their suspensions beginning on the final roster cutdown date.

"Jameson takes full responsibility for his actions and is very apologetic to the NFL, his teammates and the fans and city of Detroit," Williams' representation, Alliance Sports, said in a statement on Friday. "However, it is important to note that Jameson's violation was not for betting on football but rather due to a technical rule regarding the actual location in which the online bet was placed -- and which would otherwise be allowed by the NFL outside of the club's facility. Jameson would never intentionally jeopardize the integrity of the game he loves so much and looks forward to getting back to his team as soon as possible."

Haha the lions can’t even have just a little bit of good vibes and success can they?

After coming off a building block season… looking like the class of the division. And this happens. Man.

I get that NFL players betting on NFL games is a problem, but why is betting on college games an issue?  Especially when every NFL broadcast is littered with ads promoting legalized betting.

NFL players can bet on college games.  Just can't do so from NFL team facilities

Exactly.  The fact that this is true doesn't really sync with a 6 game suspension for a first time violation.  Jameson literally could have walked 500 yards in any direction, placed the exact same bet, and the league would have no issue with it.   He didn't walk those 500 yards, and now he's serving a 6 game suspension. The entire thing sounds like nonsense to me.

Things like this are just an idiot test.  Much like getting busted for weed when you are told when the test is going to be.  Is it a dumb rule? Yes.  Is it difficult not to follow this rule? Not in the least bit.

It is like I hire you to your dream job, give you twice your asking pay, and one of the caveats is don't wear a yellow hat to work on Wednesdays.  Yet you choose to wear a yellow hat next Wednesday.

Specifically the reason that they're monitoring for "best on non-NFL games" made at NFL facilities is that it is against the rules for team personnel to do this anywhere.  So the rule for players is "at team facilities."  Most of the people in an NFL building are team personnel rather than players, after all.

The players have a specific carve-out to gamble on non-NFL stuff because their deal is collectively bargained, something the assistant equipment manager does not have.

Cuts both ways… you can say oh it would be fine 500 yards away and it’s fine, this is stupid. Yet everyone can say… yeah, why wasn’t he smart enough to walk 500 yards in any direction then? I’m sure it has everything to do with structuring a culture within NFL buildings and wanting that to be like a “smoking free zone” type deal, just with betting.

better yet… these players can have a person that places bets on their behalf behave, and avoid the situation all together.

It might be stupid…. But their own players union agreed to it. So at this point they are dumb not to follow, more so if like you said… 500 yards in every directions they are fine.
