Salary cap set at 177.2 million for 2018 season

As a reference, it was 167M last year.

Seems like good news, but in reality as every team gets 10M more - it means nothing in terms of trying to acquire the best players.   Cap increases mean the highest paid positions get paid more.   But for teams that aren't looking for FA's, but trying to just get to the black, instead of red numbers, it's a temporary reprieve.   When they have to compete with FA's, though, cap hell still will be a problem.

Here's a cap projection from February of 2016 by the guys at Salary Cap Crunch

They came in at $170 M for their guess on 2018 cap number.

Cool website with a fair amount of info, but they didn't make it a financial success and haven't updated it recently. But they do go into great detail on the various buckets of cash that make up the NFL salary cap

I was wondering what happened in the early 1990s that caused the average salary to sky rocket like that.

Did a quick google and found out unrestricted free agency didn't begin until 1992 when players sued the NFL and a U.S. jury found the free agency system in place to be unfair.

fun read! best quote was this by a NFL lawyer. lol

Quote

"the destruction of the National Football League as we know it."

Rate of growth continues to decline

2015 Cap = $ 143, 280,000.....growth dollars vs previous year... ( growth % vs previous year )

2016 cap = $ 155, 270,000..... $ 11,990,000..... ( 8.37 %)

2017 cap = $ 167, 000,000..... $ 11,730,000.....  (7.55 %)

2018 cap = $ 177, 200,000..... $ 10, 200, 000..... (6.10 %)

Smaller increase in actual dollars on an increasingly larger base cap number.

So while the total cap $$ continues to increase, the rate of growth has slowed down in recent years.

Considering how much money the owners make, are we really that upset the players get paid a ton?

I’m upset that they charge me 14 bucks for a beer after they gouge me for 200 bucks a seat.

Horse track has beers for fifty cents!

Poor decision making isn't something the NFL wants more of from their fans at the game.

In simple terms.

Growth Rate ≈ 8.08%-0.61x%+0.58x²%-0.14x³%

With x being represented by (Year - 2013)
