Most Deceiving Opening Week Performances

Here's some examples of Week 1 performances that were in no way indicative of how the rest of the season played out

2015: San Francisco 20, Minnesota 3

Lots of people were fooled into thinking Colin Kaepernick could be an accurate quarterback and the team could just ride Carlos Hyde.  But it quickly became pretty clear that this game was a fluke.  The season ended with the Vikings winning the NFC North while the 49ers predictably finished near the bottom of the league at 5-11

2012: NY Jets 48, Buffalo 28

It seemed the entire offseason in 2012 centered around the Jets and their media circus. Many people expected Sanchez to fail and Tebow to take his place (lol). But for one week only, Sanchez made everyone forget about Tebow and delivered an impressive 3 TD performance. It would take the Jets an entire calendar month before they would combine to score 48 points over their next 4 games. It cannot be understated how hilarious that season was to watch

1997: Dallas 37, Pittsburgh 7

Dallas went into Pittsburgh and straight up embarrassed Kordell Stewart and the Steelers. Most people assumed that the Cowboys were poised for another Super Bowl run and the Steelers' dominance in the AFC was over. Instead, the Cowboys struggled all season long after that game and finished 6-10, while the Steelers quickly rebounded to go 11-5 and all the way to the AFC Championship Game. This game was the last recorded moment that the Cowboys looked like a legitimate Super Bowl contender

The Titans beat the Chiefs 28-2 in 2014 and beat the Bucs 42-14 the following year. Finished like 3-13 both times.

The Panthers started out 1-0 one year and finished 1-15.

Last year (not week 1 but Tampa's opening week) the Bucs went full Bill Goldberg on the Bears and was downhill after that.

Ken Whisenhunt is the greatest opening day head coach in NFL history.

He's the worst next 15 games coach in NFL history though.

That was gonna be my pick. Didn’t NE have almost an equal beat down of them in week 17 that year?

It was the exact same score but flipped lol

Vividly remember because the first Bills game i ever attended was the week one game and i was like woahhhh this is awesome (i was 9) then it took us 8!!!!!! Years to beat them again....and we played them twice a year.

Not really. Colin K had a very pedestrian performance that game. 49ers fans were already starting to groan at Colin the previous year when he really had to carry the team on his back, but didn't. Carlos Hyde was the star of that game against the Vikings. Even so, with Tomsula at head coach, and all of the retirements...don't think anyone thought the team was going anywhere. It's not like the Vikings were coming off a great season that year either.

Fair enough, I was among those who were skeptical of Kaepernick at the time myself.  And of course it was easy to see the 49ers demise coming given the offseason they suffered through prior to that season.  I was just trying to make the point that both teams went in opposite directions after that game

Another game that's a good example of this is Titans @ Chiefs from the year before.  The Titans won 26-10 in a game where the Chiefs looked completely lost, especially offensively.  Tennessee would win only 1 more game that year while the Chiefs rallied from an 0-2 start to a 9-7 finish and barely missed the playoffs

09-08-2008 Broncos vs Raiders Monday night and JaWalrus Purple drank

Broncos 41 Raiders 14

Not really sure how this one is deceiving given that the Broncos were one of the top offensive teams in the league in 2008 while the Raiders were one of the worst

Heh, he was batting 1.000, should've retired on top. Those post-Harbaugh seasons with that knucklehead GM Baalke utterly destroying the roster was painful to watch unfold for a team with 5 SB wins. Glad they fired that dolt and hired GM Lynch instead, now they're coming up again.
