This. There is a big difference between spending big to upgrade a meh/average starter (getting a stud DE for example), versus getting a minor upgrade from very good to elite by paying someone 10x what you pay the current starter. No reason WHATSOEVER we should be signing a starter at safety this year. Unless we are going full nickel base with a "safety" who plays a full-time SS/LB/slot role.
candyman93
Sign Justin Houston (if he’s cut) and draft Ben Banogu. Boom. Pass rush fixed.

Isn't Houston like 30 and gonna be 31 by the start of the season? I like Houston don't get me wrong but I would have to imagine that he is really close to being on the down swing of his career. I am still praying to the football gods for Ferrell in the 1st and Jones/Simmons in the 2nd. I stand corrected he just turned 30 in Jan. But my point still stands. Kiwibrown
They aren't releasing him before trading him. We should start by offering the 5th from jax, and move from their. Odds are 50/50 a 5th makes the roster and a lot less than offer the 2 year impact which Houston will give.

No one is trading for that contract. He’s getting cut.

But why would we when we can have him way cheaper? No one will take on that contract and he has a connection with Dorsey (Dorsey is the guy who signed him to the massive contract he is currently on) so I would hope they wait until he is cut and then resign him to a reasonable contract and not waste a pick (no matter what round) for no reason.
TheeRealDeal
Yeah 21.1 million cap number in 2019 and 19 million in 2020 no one is trading for that contract.

I got the numbers wrong. 19 and 20 million. I'd take him for half that.

He will command 10-13 million a year easy but 20 per year is not going to happen. Cameron Wake was 37 and got a 9.125 million contract. Brandon Graham is one year older than Houston and just pulled in a 13 mil per year contract, so Justin Houston is still going to get paid very well just not 20 per year. Apparently he is one of the higher paid runningbacks in the league? Also, was not happy last year with his decreased touches, but was a true professional and didn't complain publicly. While i have always liked Duke as a Browns player, is it worth the money to keep him if he's not going to see the field as much with Chubb and eventually Hunt getting the bulk of the carries? On a positive note it is nice to finally have to make decisions on players that other teams actually covet. Means we are building a damn good football team. Kiwibrown
Dukes value is awesome, 5 million per year for a guy who can get 1k YFS 10thhighest paid RB in the NFL and it is going to go down when the next few guys sign, like Zeke, Bell, Henry.

No doubt he is a valuable player, that is why teams are inquiring about his availability. But if he's not happy here and we can sell while his value is high I think you jump at that chance. I would hope we could recoup a 3rd which is the round he was drafted and at the very least a 4th for him. Anything less then that I'd say no deal. I still think the running back position is undervalued across the league, so lets at least see what teams offer.
