What's the purpose for Zion to do this?  And where is he forcing himself to go?

Because New Orleans couldn't build a consistent winner around Anthony Davis so how are they going to build one around Zion?

They made it to the second round of the playoffs last year and lost to the Warriors.

When he played last season, they made it to the second round of the playoffs and lost to the Warriors. Everyone loses to the Warriors.  How is that not competing?  It's not like the Pelicans were a bottom dwelling team with him last year.

They were disappointing this year and then Davis missed 25 games.

Not competing is the Phoenix Suns.  The Pelicans were a postseason team last year.

They haven't been able to be consistently in the playoffs.  For a guy that's an arguably top 5 talent in the league that has to be hard to swallow.

I guess it depends on what you mean by guarantee. In terms of generating buzz and increasing attendance/profits, he's already a huge win. And his playing style lends itself to consistent airtime, e.g. Sports Center, House of Highlights, etc. So you're getting that at the very least. At a bare minimum you have the modern day Shawn Kemp without all the baggage. Best case, you have some hybrid combination of Charles Barkley and LeBron James. That's is arguably better than any prospect, outside of maybe Ben Simmons, in the past 4 drafts.

At bare minimum, he's Shawn Kemp? That's flat out absurd.

So with a top 5 player in his prime, their ceiling is a 2nd round team. Davis just demanded a trade to a bigger market team for a reason, it's going to be almost impossible for them to build a championship contender down there. The #1 pick does change things though, especially if they can convince Davis to stay.

They made the playoffs twice in seven years. They had a worse record over that time than the charlotte hornets. They also had a fake GM structure (a football dude ran it), a terrible training staff, and the worst wing rotation in the NBA.

They blew it. It looks like they are changing things, and kudos to them, but they absolutely blew it. One playoff series win doesn't change that.

That's fair.  However, why is it the franchise that takes the blame.  If the guy is so great, why can't he lead the team to the playoffs?  I mean, Harden got the Rockets to the playoffs years ago with a pretty bad roster (Kevin Martin, etc).

Maybe Davis isn't the player we all thought he was then.

Why do you say that? You don't think his style of play lends itself to a modern day Kemp? Obviously they're different players in terms size, but given the height of most NBA centers nowadays, it's all just relative.

Everyone can't win.  Winning is not how you determine if someone's career is a waste.  Over the last 5 years.  If you haven't been on the Warriors or on LeBron team, you haven't won a championship.  If he really wants to win and that's what it's all about, why not demand a trade to Golden State?

Was Lillard's career a waste before this season?

It's not just about making the playoffs though, it's about competing for championships. Playing for the Lakers or Knicks you know that there's a chance for the organization to add another star via free agency. Zion and his camp can't be happy to be going there, the star just requested a trade and they've done very little to build a good team that can compete around him. And Davis is by far better and more impactful than Zion will ever be in the league.

So two years ago when Davis played in 75 games and the Pelicans didn't make the playoffs... that's the franchise's fault entirely?  Why wasn't Davis able to will his team to the postseason.... other players who are deemed elite are able to do that on a consistent basis.  Why can't he?

Because no prospect's bare minimum is a 20/10 all star. They also don't play anything alike.

The Knicks haven't competed for a championship in like 40 years.  The Lakers are the single biggest joke of a franchise in ALL of sports right now.  Those are the teams he's forcing himself to go to?

See, that shows me right there that winning isn't important if you're talking about going to the Knicks or Lakers.

One of my gripes with Davis is that he wants to play the 4, but he's a modern 5.  If he's playing the 4 then that gives your team problems with your other big.  Either you have another amazing big to pair with Davis, a guy who can both shoot and defend the rim AND the perimeter *cough*Zion*cough* or you need Davis playing the 5 in the modern NBA.
