There are always side effects with any therapeutic and the FDA and MDs weigh them on the Risk/Reward ratio. For a nasal decongestant, the FDA accepts minimal or no risk ( toxicity) just to clear a stuffy nose.  Conversely, for a cancer treatment, the FDA will accept major toxicity ( nausea, hair loss, bleeding, anemia)  because the alternative is death. Blue vision is transient and non-toxic so both the FDA and consumers are willing to accept that trade-off

I’ll also add the FDA here in America is FAR less stingy than the UK. The UK does NOT condone a fair amount of drugs readily available here in America, particularly with livestock.

Hey, I was the one who tried to get a bourbon/whiskey discussion going....

Going back to that...when I drink my bourbon, I like it poured over a ball of ice with just a touch of water in it.

If I were to order it that way at a bar, what is it called?  Neat over ice?  Or should I just order it over ice and let it melt to get that water effect?

Or, you could go for a 21 year old Oak Barreled MacAllen. a snip at £409.95.....or the 25 year old Speyside sherry oak single malt, £1750.00. Or maybe Gordon and MacPhail's 60 year old Private Collection at £22,000.00.

At a more reasonable price I liked the more rounded taste of a basic Balvenie (12yo) at £16.15 over the more fiery Speyside whiskies like Bushmill's Black Bush (£26.95).

Abelour, Ardbeg, MacAllen (the 12yo at about £50, not the crazy priced ones), Talisker, Johnny Walker 12yo Black Label, The Glenlivet, Jameson, I've tried them and enjoyed them, but I couldn't tell you now the distinctive differencies between them (maybe that in itself is an endorsement of sorts, several of my friends LOVE whisky). The site below gives a 'shop by flavour' grouping, which is a starting point for whiskies, though since it is called a scotch-whisky site, I guess Irish whiskies are largely missing.

Basic bar whisky I adulterate with plenty of American Dry Ginger, good ones I take neat of course. Yes, I probably still count as a heathen.

Make sure you know the bartender.  Once in college I ordered a whiskey and water.  Poured about the same ratio as a rum and coke.  It tasted like dirty water.  I just looked at the waitress dumbfounded, who does that? xD  A good place won't do that to you.  If I am drinking straight whiskey or rum at a bar, I just get it on the rocks and let the ice melt a little.  You'll get the proper ratio for your taste eventually.  The pace of drinking will change too.  At first it will be strong and you will just sip, then it will be just right, then you slow down again when there is a bit too much water in it.

And remember, a good whiskey, or anything for that matter, is the one that you like.  If you like the flavor of $4 a liter Fighting ****, by all means, that is a good whiskey for you.  If you find that you do have expensive taste, drink less, or have one good one first then switch to something cheaper.

 

 

But don't drink the Fighting ****...  That stuff is nasty.

 

[edit]the **** is another word for, "rooster."  I didn't know that was censored, but I understand why.  Still don't drink the Fighting **** though.

Anyone try this brand?  Looks like it is made in Dane, Wisconsin.  I'm skeptical, but a coworker of mine tried it and really liked it.  They even have tours with tastings, I'm thinking about going and trying the tasting.

Then I think I just need to go to a nicer bar...there's a nice one close to where I work and just start tasting....

That website makes me want to try their product.  BUT, you could make the same exact site and replace the bourbon with Steel Reserve.

 

I think trying one or two at a bar to figure out which taste good to you is the best bet.  

 

I like to try new drinks.  So far the worst that I have had are:

So i took the Missus out for a nice sushi dinner on Saturday...  Started by asking for some Angel's Envy...but the bar didn't have it.  Ended up doing a tasting of Woodford Reserve and Basil Hayden's bourbon.  While the Woodford was okay for my taste, I really liked the Basil Hayden.  Little sweeter.  But...I had it over ice and it lost a lot of what I liked when the ice started to melt.  I need to try it again with just a splash of water, no ice.
