mse326
Not surprising but Power decided he's going to return to Michigan for this season. That team is stupid stacked

There have to be better places for the Coyotes to play. That experiment has not worked out as hoped. If Quebec can support two teams (and it seems like people believe that it can) then I have no problem with them moving up north. I'm not sure what other American cities are really primed to take in an NHL team right away or have satisfactory long term prospects. So with Merulo, I know there is some sort of sportsbook connection. As in he has ties to casinos/gambling type business there. I think if anything he'd sell before moving the team. He stands to gain a ton from trying to make it work. Apart from that, I think Houston is a potential market. Dallas would be up in arms, but another Texas team makes sense. I wonder if they give Atlanta another shot. They are a southern team and that market still has potential. Quebec will get the ra ra type support but I don't think they have the media market to make it work. Honestly though, Arizona is a mess of a franchise for as long as they've existed. They had some success under Tippett, but overall it's been unstable at best. Sucks for the fans, but man if I'm the NHL, I think it's time to move. Also Katie Strang is up there with Friedman as one of the best hockey journalists right now.

Or is he draft eligible for the next draft? Buffalo has his rights. The length of the rights vary by region they are picked out of. Chl draftees have 2 years to sign. Players in college have their rights retained through their NCAA eligibility. Typically, 4 years, but Power having already played a season has only 3 left. However, if a player plays their +1 year in a junior league such as the USHL before going to college, it's 5 years to retain rights. For players drafted out of leagues with an NHL transfer agreement, it's typically 4 years, but varies by age. This covers swedish leagues, Finland, etc. Basically, they are unrestricted free agents at 22 if not signed Russia is a special case because they don't have a transfer agreement so I believe teams retain draft rights indefinitely. Though I could be wrong and it could only be until 27. I forget

I knew that unsigned graduating seniors could sign as FA but didn't realize it was this complicated. That is insane.

They aren't redshirts like football as far as I know, but they may not enroll right away. They may take a developmental year in another junior league. In that instance, the team will retain rights for 5 years. Ethan Edwards was a guy that the devils picked out of the ajhl in 2020. He committed to Michigan for college hockey, but they didn't have a spot for him, so last year he played in the USHL. This year will be his freshman year at Michigan, though he's the age of a sophomore. The devils will have his rights 4 more years through his senior college season, which will mean the devils have his rights for 5 years in total
beekay414
@Forge I think the 27 year old birthday reserve rights are for players that didn't get another contract after their first ELC and then went overseas.

Forge
I just realized that Thornton and Marleau were picks 1 and 2 in the 1997 draft. 1997. Thats 3500 games and Joe is coming back this year. That's insane (also, fun note...pick 3 was Olli Jokinen who played 1200 and the top 5 all played at least 1K, one of whom was a goalie)
biggie.
Makes a ton of sense for Owen to go back. Buffalo still has a way to go to get bck to being competitive, so Owen can focus on winning a championship and getting his degree.
