Has a 5th year option on a QB paid off yet?

  • Darnold? ugh
  • Baker? purgatory
  • Mariota? no
  • Lick-a-dub? no

Lamar and Josh Allen. Allen was resigned after the team picked up the 5th, even though he didn't play that year it pushed the new money years to 2023.

Lamar has a -- passer rating with 0 wins on his 5th year option so far. You can't really call the future a success.

I'd expect him to bounce back and improve from 2021 but if so, would he be the first 5th year option QB to play well on that 5th year?

Sure, but that has more to do with him being the only good QB who doesn't WANT an extension by his 5th year. Your question was has the 5th year option "paid off" and it obviously has for the Ravens because without it he'd be on a franchise tag costing more money and limiting/raising the cost of using repeated tags. Baker and Darnold haven't played their 5th year yet either.

Also, technically the guys who were extended still have that 5th option year.

Josh Allen signed a 6 year deal

Mahomes signed a 10 year deal

In both cases those X years start after the 5 year option (2022 for Allen 2021 for Mahomes).
