he’s not holding off jimmy. He played objectively below average but he did not keep us out of the game.  just wish he could have put the team on his back

Yeah, I mean Jimmy's lost this same game a couple of times. Reminded me a lot of the Arizona opener two years ago with all of the penalties on defense against a team expected to be bad with a mobile quarterback and the offensive stagnation. The weather and defensive penalties and quarterback bricks were also very Colts game last year.

Lance was up and down and mostly down. Can't blame him for much once the monsoon came in, but he was getting his head down too fast and missing opportunities before that. The pick was a back breaker and was really bad. But it was very Jimmy G bad over aggressively trying to fit a throw into the middle of the field. Before that, he was mostly all right.

On the other hand, his head had to come down fast because the interior offensive line was atrocious. That was an entirely foreseeable problem that we never addressed and was an easy way to help a young quarterback (Or any quarterback, mind. Jimmy G under pressure is a very bad player. Garoppolo was very, very good when not pressured last year [see the Atlanta game with their defunct defense line], but his drop off from not pressured to pressured is hideous according to pretty much every site that tracks pressured dropbacks).

Plus we lost a fumble in the red zone. Fumble luck is always random over the course of several seasons. That hurt. Plus we gave away opportunities with 4th and short punts and field goals. Drives are precious. We regularly give them away willingly. In a game that will be even closer to the margins because talent and scheme discrepancies are limited by the weather, you can afford to do that even less. Plus we were down Elijah Mitchell and George Kittle and without Mitchell the run game died a horrible death.

And most importantly, weather dictated that defenses would have the advantage over offenses. Ours was supposed to be the guy. It was up against a team with very little receiver talent and bad tackles in the rain and the mud and the wind and kept making penalties and having breakdowns that gave the Bears opportunities. Their defense didn't.

In short, it was a gross, unfortunate game that may or may not be interesting as a data point in predicting future results.

Rain soaked game. Opening day with new QB (essentially). No Kittle. Bad penalty luck. Not concerned. Thought the 49ers would probably take an L here anyway.

If the 49ers get beatdown at home against Seattle I'll be bummed. Can't keep dropping games to seemingly-inferior squads.

As for the game, everything has been pretty much mentioned by others but we will be fine. Lance, until the weather got terrible was fairly accurate and made the big plays we expected from him. He moved well in the pocket at times and made good plays with his legs. The miss to Kroft was bad and staring down Jennings on the INT was terrible. Needs to clean things up going forward obviously.

The defense allowed 204 yards and 3.6 YPP. Some bad luck on the Pettis TD but overall we know this unit will be great. The penalties were just stupid and extended far too many drives. While I don't expect 12 penalties a game, this unit plays fast and physical so you just have to accept they will rank in the bottom 5 in penalties again this season.

Mason is going to have to be a big part of the offense for as long as Mitchell is out. Wilson just doesn't have the same type of juice. Mitchell gets some hate for some reason bout he's just GOOD and the run gsme isn't nearly as good when he's out.

Kittle needs to return soon. He will open up the passing game more and will be able to have chances to make big plays down the field.

Weird things can happen in week one so no need to panic. We have some holes but we knew that going into the season. Just need to now split vs the Broncos/Rams and beat the Seahawks next week.
