Alot of these FA targets are on teams in similar positions to us and Im not sure why people think they will walk haha

Like why does anybody think players from the Jags and the Niners will walk? Like both teams were in the playoffs with young QB's....why are they letting Glinechey and other lineman go?

Because unless those players are getting the Franchise Tag, the team doesn't really have a say so on what the player does

And those things (young QB, were in the playoffs) dont really actually impact what a player actually wants. Its almost entirely about where they can make the most money, especially for first time free agents. Sure if contracts are close, things like team success-location-familiarity come into play, but with the butt-load of Cap Space we have in the next 3 years, we have the ability to get any singular player we want if they hit free agency

Cap is usually the cause.  I know the Jags currently only have 13m in cap room, which isn't enough to extend players and pay draft picks.

Yep. And those young QBs will demand money later, at least in Lawrence's case. So far he looks legit and will be getting a big deal. Lance isn't looking hot but to be fair he has had almost no time with the injury. Purdy heals and is anywhere near as efficient as last season he will get a Brinks truck backed up to him by somebody too.

Look at 2024 for them. SF has $2mil right now in cap space, but in 2024 they have Nick Bosa (who will get a market-altering deal) and Aiyuk may (and should IMO) want #1 money. That is on top of several players like McGlinchey, Moseley, Ward, Ebukam, and whoever may end up being the QB of the future to all want paid. CMC is going to be more expensive from this year on out, Deebo Samuel goes into 2024 with a $28+ mil cap hit that they will have to work out to extend/restructure. Eventually talent wants paid and SF has a LOT of talent.

All the more reason I’d advocate for spending on OL in FA. Are they the best of the best? No. But are there multiple above average players there who are a significant upgrade? YES. Get the most value you can when you’re going to have to overpay anyway.

There is no question we will be getting OL in FA.

His info is usually pretty good, especially with the broncos since he works out of their building.  But he’s very abrasive with people on Twitter.

It's more just the smarmy (not sure if this is an American word hahaha) way he went on about Fields.

Lol yeah definitely not an American term.

Yeah he was pretty weird about Fields and wouldn’t really give an explanation, but seemed happy the Broncos didn’t draft him.

I'll parrot the same thing I've said for a while,  QB and RB contacts should be looked at as a group. 99% of the time the ball is in one of their hands. Rookie contracts QBs make signing a top 5 RB ridiculously easy AND they are worth it imo.

I think the mistake is people tend to think because supply of good RBs is high, then RBs are not valuable as a position.  RBs are extremely valuable as they touch ball 2nd most on team.

But problem is they are only worth it if OL is good enough to make them worth it.

Even best RBs can't break through the tackles of modern DL and even most LBs.

Those guys are just too big, athletic and strong.  2022 Bears D line not withstanding.

Where great RBs come in handy is when you have a good enough OL to give them some space to use their athleticism.   Or they can be used to create mismatches in passing game.   -See Christian McCaffery for 49ers in 2022.

Then you get those explosive plays that are so conducive to winning games.

If you have a bad OL and/or no passing game your elite RB doesn't help that much.

On other hand if you have elite OL a lot of RBs look really good.  So best world is to have a great OL and a great RB.

But if you have to pick between two you should always choose great OL.

Agreed on all points. To add to it though, Fields made an average (run blocking specifically) OL look WAY better than it really was due to his explosiveness.

I'm not saying to ignore OL but just that Fields creates major creases for him. Defenses saw him run for the 2nd most rushing yards of any QB in a season, and he really wasn't able to use his legs like that early on in the season. Monty is a fighter but isn't special IMO and to be honest I think Herbert is a solid rotational piece, but don't see him being a bellcow back either. Fields took a mid-level run game to an elite running group. A lot of that was with guys like Adding Barkley or Jacobs and just 1-2 upgrades on the OL (lets say McGlinchey and a 2-3rd round IOL, Whitehair either goes to C or stays at LG) then the OL is pretty well improved.

Remember we only had Mustipher and Jones play over 700 snaps on offense. Jenkins, Reiff, Borom, and Patrick all were under 600. Even just a normal level of health on the OL would mean drasric improvement, and I think moving Mustipher, Patrick and Borom to full time depth makes the OL's floor improved too.

OL is more important than RB, but with the cap space Chicago has they shouldn't have to compromise between the two. I don't believe Brown Jr or McGary reach FA, McGlinchey will get overpaid but won't have a crippling contract in any way, and IOL options don't look like they'll be ridiculous. There may be a Christian Kirk level overpay somewhere but Poles doesn't seem desperate enough to jump to that.

Regardless raising the floor of this team should be a damn easy task for the staff.
