the fact he's still employed and it's almost noon on tuesday has entirely ruined my week

julio would unironically be head and shoulders the best WR Lamar has ever played with lol it's more like they'd trade for Corey Davis or something - who, in his own right, would still be the best WR Lamar has ever played with!

I know about his wide 9 front but what’s his coverage scheme look like? Man to man? Zone? I just hope he doesn’t run 10 yards off the line soft zone like joe woods did.

The soft zone didn't work because we didn't have any significant pass rush outside of Myles

I would also throw in the lack of creativity and just flat out not adjusting to what the opposing offense is doing.

It's pointless drafting CBs who excelled at man coverage in college during the first 3 rounds, only to mainly have them play zone. It's even more annoying when you see how much better they are when played to their strengths.

Never forget the Falcons ran like 14 (!!!) straight run plays to a TD. We knew they were going to run it and a DC that can't scheme something so that Marcus Mariota and the two RBs (one was a rookie) don't literally march down the field, shouldn't be the DC of an NFL team.

Oof. Hate to break it to you but the bold is literally just Schwartz.

I have faith this hire could work for a bit in Cleveland  cause you guys do have some nice talent in spots Schwartz utilizes well. Garrett is going to feast in the wide 9 and your CB's will be in a lot more man than you are used to. That said, his scheme is the definition of boring and plain... and during his tenure in Philly the number one issue everyone had with him was his refusal to ever adjust to anything. He is very much a line up and play kind of coach. He will count on his guys making the plays needed when put in position. Don't expect to see much disguise at all. Don't expect to see much blitzing at all. Expect your front four to fly up field and your DB's to be left on islands.

When the talent is good Schwartz's scheme is great. The 2017 Eagles defense is a perfect example of that. When it isn't you will see a ton of guys just getting beat every week cause they are being asked to do things they can't.

Schwartz problem is, he doesn't adapt to the strengths of his players, the players adapt to his scheme.  Round peg, square hole syndrome. Frustrating as hell.

If you get in his doghouse AKA Rasul Douglas and Sidney Jones, GL!!!! For whatever the reasoning Jim also has a tendency to go prevent in 4th QT's allowing way to many comebacks.

Despite all of those flaws, a very aggressive,  pressure/TO creating DC. Should be a good hire.

Not Johnathan Gannon,  Shane Steichen.  🤷‍♂️

One could argument Gannon attempted to install his system in 2021 with POS players to install it while Howie got better players that fit said style in 2022, but Schwartz is on a whole new level.  Just saying

fwiw, tennessee has been very good about playing to guys' strengths on defense over the last few years. the exceptions have been when we've been so injured that we've had no choice to play guys in not-ideal positions, and unfortunately that's been...kind of a lot lol. but generally we've done a really good job of highlighting the difference-makers and hiding the liabilities on what is a rather average unit talent-wise.

it's tough to know how much of that is schwartz though. his tenure as defensive coordinator of the titans wayyyyy back in the late 2000s was pretty much what you're describing here- man-heavy, wide 9, basically no blitzes, pretty vanillla just lining up and playing. it looked spectacular when albert haynesworth went god mode for a couple of seasons and was wrecking the game every week (and he rode that to the lions HC job); it looked considerably less good aside from that lol. but that was quite a long time ago.
