Joe Barry HAS Been Fired, Who Do You Want Next?

A name I want to bring up again that I mentioned a few hundred pages back, James Bettcher.

Young, 45
Has been a DC before 2015 to 2017 (when he was 35 years old) with the Cards, top 6 defence every year
Had a bad stint with the Giants as DC
Was on the Niners staff in 2021
Currently with the Bengals as LB coach
Is a run game specialist. We f'ing need that!!!!
Coached under Arians, Bowles, Pagano

Has had the experience at a young age. Been knocked down, building himself back up. I like the story, I like the person (not as much as Barry of course)

People MLF has worked with know Bettcher (Zac Taylor, Shanahan) so could vouch for him and give MLF a sense of his character.

Ummmm....so you want LaFleur fired and go with Zimmer as DC and Leonard as HC? despite the fact both are defence coaches.

You're worse than Belichick. 🤣

Not sure why some people are jumping the Zimmer bandwagon. He has been out of the NFL for three years with only one small side gig since then and that was 2 years ago. It's almost certain he's fully retired.

See below. The word is he wants to come back. That's not saying someone will hire him. Let's also not forget the guy wouldn't shake Lafluer's hand or did it in a pretty disrespectful manner. Does he want to hire someone who treated him like that?

It would make a great photo op. Zimmer shaking a schit-eating grinning LaFleur’s (with freshly shaped eyebrows) hand in front of the Packers beat

I actually wouldn't mind Rex as DC.

Ask yourself a few questions...

When is the last time Rex Ryan coordinated a defense?

Then ask yourself how much the game has changed since he last coordinated a defense?

Finally ask yourself what he has done since he last coordinated a defense to counter the new offenses?

I wanted Rex to pair with Mac back in the day.  Let Rex take the heat for the defense, let Mac run the offense.  But that is a tough ask for both coaches...one has to take a back seat.

So even if you do feel like Rex has kept up with a defense to compete with the new offenses, the same power struggle would occur between the HC and the DC.  Rex just has a large personality and I don't see him taking a back seat to any head coach.

That's how I feel, and please understand, I'm a Rex Ryan fan and I believe he'd like the feet he'd see in Green Bay.

I just want a DC with some edge to them. Right or wrong Rex isn't afraid to speak his mind. We got a lot of draft capital on a defense that plays with a weak mindset.

Scheme should play a large part in determining how much investment we need at safety. We definitely need better quality there, but will it be an engine of the defense or simply a back line that keeps everything in front of them. I hope we have strong coaches to develop whatever talent we have there. The secondary needs to have a clear vision, if the offense takes another big step teams will be airing it out trying to catch up.

Is there a defensive version of LaFleur's offense? Multiple fronts, shifts coverage/blitz deception, forcing matchups?

Who runs that kind of defense well? Philosophically it would make sense.

Ravens were 25th in blitz percentage but #1 in sacks. That's the kind of defense I want.

Are coordinator positions subject to the Rooney Rule as well?

Teams must interview 1 external minority candidate for coordinator positions, 2 for head coach positions.

So, you want an edge.  Got it.  Rex has it in spades.

I'd worry, very much, that the game passed him by and that he has too much edge and that would cause conflict with MLF.

Ideally you find a younger guy that has kept up with the game who won't cause conflict.  It shouldn't be all that hard to find that kind of guy.  But I don't feel at all that Rex is that guy.
