Detroit signs Jared Goff to 4 year extension worth $212 million/$170 M guaranteed

My first thought of this signing was Hendon Hooker is not the first round qb that fell due to injuries that many as thought.

My second thought is I like it for Goff and the lions it's hard to do better than Goff.

And now Shanahan looks like a doofus for selling the farm for Trey Lance. I love coach, but in recent years maybe he (along with various others) got too cozy with the fantasy of nabbing a Josh Allen/unicorn at times. Purdy if anything, is a breath of fresh air, and more importantly a reality-check that the right guy may not have all the bells and whistles as advertised in others.

Eh.

There's going to be a lot of results based thinking here on both sides. Yeah, Purdy looks better than Lance, but if Lance had been stroud, maybe it's a different conversation about how shanny looks. It's the highest of high variance plays. For as awesome as purdy is, he's not challenging the idea that you need a higher level QB because he didn't win (again, this is results based) and went precisely as far as Goff and Jimmy. I mean, if Purdy ends up being Goff / Kirk, that's a huge win given where he was picked and whatnot, but puts them right in that spot that @Packerraymond is referencing.

I can give people crap for the hyperbole they spew against Purdy, but there is still a valid point to be made with regards to his supporting cast masking at least some of what is him and what isn't. As @Soko said elsewhere, it's what prevents him from being viewed as an elite QB (maybe rightfully, maybe not) but also prohibits him from getting his rightful credit. It's a weird, murky area with Purdy.

Plot twist: Hooker has shown to be a first-round caliber in practice; Detroit kept Goff to have their own version of the Falcons’ Penix-Cousins.

maybe if there's an out after like two years or something.

The thing I wonder about here is what's going to happen with Hendon Hooker.  Like a large part of the reason it made sense for the Lions to spend a 3rd round pick on a 25 year old injured QB was the hopes that he would be able to take over for Goff in a couple of years.  With Goff's extension that's probably not happening, so I wonder if a team tries to trade for him.

I mean, I know you need a backup but Nate Sudfield was Goff's backup in Detroit before they drafted Hooker.

Lions should be very proud of their team from last year

I don't see Goff as an especially big part of it; no more so than Mayfield suddenly looking like a top 10 QB

Purdy just has so much more upside; even when he didn't tear up the playoffs a year after a serious injury

prove-it deals are probably impossible with player agents; who will walk if they don't get what they want

I'm curious from both people who like this and people who hate this -

What would make you consider this a "good" extension?

Like, certainly if he plays well and wins a SB we would all say it was a great extension, but that seems like unrealistic expectations.

So I guess I'm asking - do we expect a SB appearance @ 50m/yr? NFFCG?

What's the expectation for the next 4 years?

Win the F'n SB!

People always go crazy after a QB signs a new contract making him one of the highest paid players in history.  It's just the way the league works.  I'm happy for Jared Goff.  Good for him, and best of luck to he and the Lions this season!

I'm happy for him. Castaway Rams QB to highest paid in a manner of 2-3 years??? 👍🥃

That said it will be funny when "He" and the Lions comes falling back to Earth in 2024! 🍺
