Where are we at on the Chargers right now? They feel like both a super bowl contender and a trainwreck.

Their "home games" are still an abomination.

They'll be alright. They always seem to start off slow.

Slow with losses. They started slow with a win yesterday. Im not worried about their defense, they'll be fine. But their oline worries me in pass protection. If they can get LT shored up, they'll be fine.  I dont wanna say what i really think, because i believe in football jinxing. So, yeah they'll be coo.

Saw a footnote on FiveThirtyEight the other day mentioning something called Yards Above Replacement, so I calculated each team's YAR+ for Week 1 (offense's YAR minus defense's YAR allowed).

Just listing the winners because the losers are obviously just the negative of the same number:

1. Baltimore Ravens: +239.5 yards

2. Kansas City Chiefs: +59.9 yards

3. New England Patriots: +57.4 yards

4. Buffalo Bills: +53.1 yards

5. Tennessee Titans: +41.7 yards

6. Philadelphia Eagles: +25.6 yards

7. Los Angeles Rams: +22.4 yards

8. Minnesota Vikings: +5.5 yards

9. Los Angeles Chargers: -6.7 yards

10. San Francisco 49ers: -10.7 yards

11. Green Bay Packers: -24.6 yards

12. Dallas Cowboys: -34.8 yards

13. Seattle Seahawks: -78.3 yards

I chalk up the 49ers and Cowboys to garbage time stats. The other negatives, I'm not so sure.

(And the ARZ-DET tie: Detroit +20.4 yards)

The niners offense just played like crap. But we'll take the win, and we're on to Cincinnati!

They were saved by one of the greatest kickers of all time.

If he hits the easy FG and the extra point then they lose by 4 in regulation.

The win will help at the end of the year but I would not count them as a great team.

Ekeler and Jackson were pretty awesome though  (sorry, Melvin!)

They combined for 8.6 yards per touch.

  • LeVeon Bell had 4.0 yards per touch.

You can't really judge Baltimore because the team they played will be about 200 yards below replacement on average after 17 weeks.

This is not a week 1 reaction. Everyone knew they would be awful before the fire sale and most took the Ravens in the knockout pool because Dolphins.

The only question I have is does Brady want the single game TD record this Sunday?

Jackson could have had it if he wanted to last week.

Whatifism. If King doesnt muff a punt or Rivers isnt off by 1 inch on a TD pass Chargers win by 2 tds.
