And 2) Space Balls is like his 5th or 6th best comedy. If it wasn't parodying Star Wars, it wouldn't have near the cultural recognition that it does. But what it ultimately boils down to is that Mel had actors he preferred to work with and most of them are either dead or barely acting anymore.
