Cuba Smugglers

Overview

We actually beat this team last season so they’ll probably have some revenge on their mind. We intend to playing with a high level of effort in a big spot. Hoping for one of our most impressive performances of the season.

Offense

Our ability to remain competitive falls on the trenches. Inspite of the flack we’ve received, Rob Havenstein is nearing an all pro caliber season, and DeCastro is one of the elite guards in the NFL. An elite right side helps as we motion a plethora of guys to the weak side as chip help in that area. We used H-Back sets with Rhett Ellison and will run pistol as an extra aid to the interior line. This can lead to them squeaking out of the backfield after blocking or staying in protection to give Watson the extra split second to move in the pocket and make accurate reads. On a handful of plays those two man routes go to Julio Jones.

Like the other high profile weapons, Julio will heap as many targets needed to remain competitive. Louisiana has a good group of CBs but none of them are Patrick Peterson. We imagine he’ll be double covered and in those instances we hope his targets lead to penalties. Watson has dropped some dimes on tape in similar coverage so Julio should still be heavily involved unless there’s 3/4 guys assigned to him. We frequently move Julio in hopes of finding a mismatch.

Louisiana recently used Chung as a money backer with Travathan on the bench. If this is remains the case this week we are going to incorporate a balance of running plays. We can get counters to the right from and mix short passes with screens when we want tempo. Runs calls includes inside zones and toss plays with some extra running plays Watson can audible into if necessary. Counter runs with DeCastro as the lead guard features one our best players leading the way by and maximizes his skill set. This is a quality front four so running away from those guys equals the playing field. After Danny Travathan, this defense isn’t well known for its playmakers at the LB position.

Finally we’re completely invested in simplifying our offensive scheme. The other guys are needed to make a few plays. Kelvin Benjamin will get a handful of targets. Donte Moncrief will yield a few targets and Yeldon is a high level 3rd down receiver. Murray handles goal line and short yardage. Dalvin Cook and Frank Gore function as 1A/1B in a fair time share.

Defense

Main Idea

We’re going to make Zeke Elliot beat us. I think highly of him so we are intent on stopping the run. We hope to get Tom Brady frustrated dealing with our pass rush.

Derwin James help coverage

Michael Thomas is going to be dealt with in plenty of ways. Usually we’ve let Derwin James come down for run defense but that’ll change in the early portions of the game. Sherman doesn’t shadow so we really think nullifying his impact is possible on the left side. Derwin is going to play some nickel back when this offense goes 4 wide. We’re reliant on zone coverage and his underneath help is how he intercepted a pass last week. Finally if we get this passing offense in obvious passing situations we’re going to bulk on pass rushers (Cox, Campbell, and Hughes on one side and let Derwin James rush the passer from the other side. He’s got production as a pass rusher and we’ve got depth at safety. This should make it hard to initially diagnose our intentions with James and possibly force Brady to throw the ball away and ultimately get stops.

Ertz

We’re investing a ton of resources to stopping Michael Thomas but Ertz is not far behind. Thomas Davis is the first source of help. LaMarcus Joyner will usually help in a double role. This will change on subpackages where we can move Ronnie Harrison at LB next to Davis. This increases the speed for our second level and makes zone coverage more feasible.

Zeke

He’s on our back burner but it’s a testament to Lukic that Brady has such a useful weapon in the backfield. We can control the line of scrimmage with Calais Campbell and Fletcher Cox. They play inside and we occasionally place Lawerence Guy inside as a sub package. The edge rush is strong with Carl Nassib who’s been a respectable edge this year.

Overall

Play our usual game. Control the line of scrimmage. Use edge rushers to occupy and harass Brady. Cover Michael Thomas with help from Derwin James. Play Man Coverage. Double Zach Ertz with Thomas Davis and LaMarcus Joyner.

I read all the way through Frogs' game plan before I realized that Lukic never turned anything in.

That being said, I thought it was risky yet pretty smart to invest everything into stopping the passing game because of how naturally strong their defensive line already is, committing any extra resources would be a luxury he probably couldn't have afforded.
