If Rivera keeps his job I could definitely see Wilks coming back to Carolina.

I expect Rivera to keep defensive play-calling so Wilks may want to go somewhere he can call the plays, but if Rivera doesn't then I'd be shocked if he didn't return.  I didn't think he was as good as McDermott, but he was still solid.

This is a stupid overreaction by Arizona.  Wilks was handed one of the worst situations in the league with a rookie quarterback behind a patchwork offensive line, what did you really expect from him?  They better have the right guy lined up here or this will make the organization look even worse than it already does

And before anyone says “well they were 8-8 without him last year”, please realize they were arguably the weakest 8-8 team in nfl history, yes even more so than the 2011 Cardinals that were lucky to go 8-8.  They had a point differential of 295-361 (-66) and by comparison, the 5-11 Bucs had one of 335-384 (-49)

Steve Wilks was regarded as a hot commodity on the coaching carousel last off-season, and a good hire by Arizona:

"The 2017 season was Wilks’ first as defensive coordinator and his aggressive mentality shined through. The Panthers were third in the NFL with sacks, bringing down the opposing quarterback 50 times. They were seventh in total defense.

His time working with defensive backs appears to be a terrific match to get the most out of Arizona’s talented group that includes Patrick Peterson, Tyrann Mathieu and Budda Baker.

Wilks was one of the hottest candidates available for teams looking to fill a head coaching vacancy. The New York Giants and Tennessee Titans were among the teams that also had interest in Wilks."
