Hope he bucks the trend of guards having a hard time getting into the HoF. Incredible player and amazing man and leader as well. Was hoping he'd give it one last ride but can't fault the guy for stepping away.

I'm not surprised he decided to this after this past year. He already got the ring in New Orleans. This past year he finally got to play on an offense that was not only one of the best this year for the first time.in his career, but a historically good one. The most productive rushing game of all time. As a fan, we can hope the team does all that again and plus wins 3 playoff games including the SB, but 1/32 teams wins a SB and realistically the likelihood is much greater for a forgettable average non-playoff season. The competitor in Yanda is definitely still disappointed in the early playoff exit, but reflecting down the road he'll probably see the 19 season as one his high notes.

Good for the Bengals, Browns, and Steelers.

He was a huge reason for that team's success in running the football. Plus, the dude was an elite pass blocker. Just overall, Yanda was an elite player that I am glad to see gone as a Browns fan.

Plus this means Baltimore will have to commit resources to OG and hypothetically, weaken them elsewhere. It's pretty easy to find run blocking guards though.

I hope they don't find Logan Stenberg in the 3rd-4th round. He'd be exactly what they are looking for.

In an era where even the best guards can't solo block the best defensive tackles should any guards go to the hall?

1. The best guards are able to block the best defensive tackles in pass protection.

With the rise of increasingly complicated pressure packages that every team now runs a **** ton of, having Guards that can hold up in isolated sets is more valuable than ever. DCoordinators figuring out that stepping an ILB up into the A gaps meant that a Guard is now matched up with the best pass rusher on the defense without help, whether he be 3-tech, edge rusher, or dime rusher off the bench, has made that position a ridiculous task to be elite at. Combined that with all the best offensive line athletes being played at Tackle, and the rest of those body types being funnelled to DT, you have a guard class that is severely lacking.

The fact that Yanda was one of the 3 best guys at his position for a decade makes him an easy choice to make the HOF. Guard and Center are the only non-specialist positions on a football field where we would even be having this discussion. If Yanda had been a top 15 pick, he would have came in with a ton more fanfare, instead he had to earn the appreciation in a media atmosphere that was not at all interested in paying any attention to Guards.

2. When have the best guards ever been asked to solo block the best defensive tackles in the run game?

In the run game, the concept of double teams in power running games has existed since the game started. By virtue of geography and positioning, the Guards are almost always involved in those double teams. If anything, you would probably make the argument that zone rushing attacks that rely on less on double teams and more on lateral quickness have put Guards in more 1v1 situations with the best DTs in the run game.

Yanda was a rare breed in that he really did have tremendous lateral speed and quickness while also displaying elite drive skills for a bunch of years.

He was one of the best offensive lineman ever. Really the fundamental flaw that he had was that he was just a little too short to play Tackle. He didn't have the length to be elite at it, was only just pretty good, but he had everything you were looking for at Guard.
