With Christian Covington signed, I think we can officially say goodbye to DeMarcus Walker. One of the worst picks of the Elway era, and somehow not even the second worst pick of that draft.

Quite a feat when you think about it.

It really is. I can’t lie, I loved the Carlos Henderson pick. Walker and Langley were immediate “well, this won’t work” reactions from me though.

I hated the Walker and Langley picks. Both were complete WTF reactions from me. I liked the position Henderson played, but not the player, especially after reading that he didn't really know the playbook at La Tech. Wild times.

Tackle is like safety: the starters are good, with NO depth. Corner is kinda the opposite: a lot of decent depth #4/5 guys, but very much missing a starter.

Yeah, we have 1 reliable starter at corner. Who is coming off a down year. But definitely a position where guys come out of nowhere. And Callahan could be healthy.

I remember very specifically that people killed the Walker pick immediately. Don't always see that - usually you can spin picks a certain way. This forum did a pretty good job of killing that draft immediately tbh. I remember defending the Henderson and McKenzie picks and people were off those.

Actually insane that Elway:

1) Gave Vance Joseph the keys

2) Gave Paxton Lynch the keys

3) Had the 2017 draft

And still has a job. I think VERY few GMs in any sport can say they made it through that sort of decision making era. And definitely very few at an organization like this.

A couple years ago I was ready to move on. I’m glad they stayed the course. One thing that’s always been Elway’s strength is adaptability. His desire to win now got him stuck trying to patchwork a declining old roster for three years, making short-sighted moves and making bad investments. In two years since, this team is completely rebuilt, loaded with young talent of high character and good coaches to develop them. They finally embraced the rebuild, now this team can chase a wildcard this year while growing over the next three. It’s exciting.

I actually thought Walker was coming along nicely as a 34DL rush specialist. Certainly not worth a R2, but he was showing some ability as a niche guy. I am not convinced this signing means he is gone.

All things considered, I would take a JAG in Walker who is a designated rusher over a JAG in Covington who is a designated JAG.

That draft really was an abomination in every respect. And the veterans HATED that group of guys.

Glass half full look at that draft, it seems to be the turning point where Elway started prioritizing character, work ethic, smarts, etc. Those traits have contributed to our draft turn around starting 2018.

Woody thinks they will try to sign Kelvin Beachum.

Would love that. Nice vet stopgap.

Yeah I was never pounding the table or anything - I was good with Elway - and I never expected him to get fired with the ownership environment being what it is. But I thought people blindly defending him the last couple years were ridiculous - a guy with those decisions on his resume deserves to get let go. But luckily he turned it around. You look at his ability to bring in Munchak as OL coach - that's something that is unique to Elway and his clout. And agree with you about his shift in the character thing and overall rebuild approach. Really excited about this season for the first time since 15 or 16

I like to tell myself that Vance Joseph was to blame for the 2017 draft and that Elway (who nearly fired him after the first season, remember) took control back in 2018. The 2018 and 2019 drafts were very impressive and 2020 looks good on paper.

Does make you wonder if Elway was hitting the sauce or having marital problems (with Joe Ellis)at that time, his decisions were very questionable around then

If everyone is keeping it a buck, Elway totally screwed Joseph lol. I mean he was incompetent. But there was still no chance he was succeeding. What a disaster the last 4 years have been

Now THAT’S someone I would allow to challenge Bolles for his job. He was just okay last year, but has enough track record (without excessive age) that he could regain ‘average starter’ form.

Side note: we don’t talk about him at all, but what did you guys think of Jake Rodgers’ start in Week 17? I remember watching it and thinking ‘I’ll have to keep my eye on this guy making his first career start,’ but honestly, I completely lost track of him. I think that’s a good thing? He graded out really well in that game, too. He’s 28 without much experience, but I don’t think it’d be crazy if the coaching staff had some faith in him as a swing tackle.
