He doesn't have to "reestablish control of the ball" to recover his own fumble; that's only speaking to if he was making the catch in the process of going to the ground. All he needs to do is have a hand to the ball, no body part touching the ground out of bounds, and make contact with the pylon/ball to break the plane... at that point the play is dead and the TD is valid.
