I don't know how else it can be called. Take away a spot foul, DBs will be tackling WRs the moment they get open. Any long pass, why risk a completion when you can just bring the receiver to the ground and give up 15 yards instead. I don't think you can have a blatant PI spot foul and a 15 yard variety, it's too subjective as was the case with face mask penalties when there was an incidental penalty. Adding more subjective calls to the game just doesn't feel right.

VikeManDan
A 15 yard penalty would still result in a first down and still allow the offense to keep moving the ball downfield. I'd like to see it be tried out. If they don't change it, fine. They need to get rid of the automatic 1st down on illegal contact/holding when the 5 yards isn't enough to result in a 1st down. If that was the case, whenever it was 3rd and 6+ the defense would just hold every player so it was impossible to get the 1st down

By your logic they'd end up getting the 1st down anyway after enough successive holds.

At least teams aren't dumb enough to hire Deion for anything coaching related. Edited March 23, 2018 by wcblack34

I doubt coaches would be happy with their defensive players turning a 3rd and 6 into a 3rd and 1. On top of that, the QB may throw somewhere else and decline. Do you see players jumping offside on 3rd and 6 just because it isn't an auto first down?

I still find it fairly unsettling that he has a giant portrait of Aikman behind his desk. Especially since there’s seemingly no other player memorabilia in the office. Any of you guys in favor can go ahead and explain to me how changing a DPI to a 15yd penalty instead of a spot penalty is a good thing. It brings the balance back towards the defense. It’s the only penalty in the game that’s a spot foul, and with as poorly and inconsistently as officials call DPI, it’s become an extra weapon for the offense. There’s absolutely no reason for the offense to have a chance at benefitting from a 20, 30, 40, etc. yard penalty without there being an equivalent for the defense.
