Giants trade CB Isaac Yiadom to Packers for CB Josh Jackson

The Packers make a move... but not for Clay Matthews. Instead, they pick up a CB.

Yiadom, formerly a Broncos third-round pick in 2018, had taken a pay cut to remain a Giant after starting 10 games for them last season. The Giants themselves received him in a trade from the Broncos for whom he started 8 games the year before. Perhaps Yiadom will finally find his forever home with the Packers.

UPDATE: Seems like it's a player for player trade... VERY oddly at the same position Josh Jacksoon was a 2nd round choice by the Pack in 2018.

My first thought was yeah, that makes a lot of sense to trade Yiadom. We have a ton of actual secondary depth (CBs who can play CB) and just traded for a ST ace CB.

But the fact that we traded him for another CB is odd. He started off really bad last year, but had some solid games down the stretch last year. He was buried on the depth chart, but was really good depth.

This is encouraging for GB.

If you want to be discouraged about Jackson, read through last week's pre-season GDT vs Houston. Jackson was targeted frequently by HOU backups and they had a lot of success against him. He was universally hated in our forum lol

Did you mention he was more of a press-man corner? If so, then this trade makes a ton of sense. Despite playing well in some starts at the end of last year, Yiadom is not a press man corner. He is so bad at it in fact, and the rest of our CB group outside of Bradberry were so bad at it, that our DC had to completely change the defense to be almost entirely zone, despite the fact that he is normally a heavy user of man schemes. The Giants made a point to acquire ONLY man corners this offseason. Aaron Robinson in the 3rd, Rodarius Williams in the 6th, Adoree Jackson in FA... all guys who can cover man to man. If Jackson trends more in that direction, then this trade makes more sense.

He was horrible in Denver, so bad they tried to get him to become a backup FS behind Justin Simmons because he is so bad outside in man coverage.

Yiadom is just....not good. He is a CB4 on a bad team, CB6 in a good secondary.

I had read that your guy was a press guy. Jackson is definitely not. He probably should have been tried at safety due to the ball skills he showed in his final year at Iowa (but has never replicated). He's not a boundary guy, but could have some upside playing safety, but might lack the physicality for it.

Yiadom is not a press guy. He should not be lined up man to man with anyone under any circumstances. Like I said before, he had some solid games towards the end of the year. In those, he was mostly in zone looks.

GB tries to get something out of a failed draft pick, NY tries to get something out a late round draft pick. From what is written they have a lot of the same deficiencies, lets hope a change of scenery can benefit both players and teams.

Id like to see this kind of trade more often instead of just cutting the player

Packer fan here, it was "reported" in our forum that he had "press-man skills".  People got giddy over that.  I googled him and found similar analysis to what you bring up.  He is not a press-man guy, so much so that the team (Giants) had to play more zone.  We aren't really sure what kind of coverage that our new DC is going to run, so we are taking a "wait and see" approach to Yiadom.

On your end, Jackson is an elite athlete.  9.26 RAS score or something like that.  But, he is a not a man corner.  He was a zone guy in college, but that never really showed up in the NFL.  And he was flat out awful in our first pre-season game against the Texans.  He isn't fast at all, so there really isn't a spot for him on specials.  Maybe he can convert to safety.  But, good luck with him.  At least he has that good RAS score to fall back on, now you just gotta get it out of him during an NFL game.
