2023 FA Targets

Looking around the league at potential cut candidates that could really help us on the DL DeForest Buckner is an obvious one given his contract and scheme fit however he is still playing so well Indy might just keep him as he fits every scheme so I started looking at some other guys and top the the list for a guy I reckon would get back to being really productive and be an excellent fit from a scheme and culture point is Leonard Williams...he has only had 2.5 sacks & 5 TFL in Wink Martindales' defence and is due to make over $32 million next season...if NY cut him post June 1st they save $18 million against the cap...he has the size and length to be the ideal UT who can also line up outside and be a handful for OTs if needed so versatility is a real plus as well.

Just heard that Justin Jones will move to DE for the last 2 games. Probably to be evaluated for next year. Has anyone else heard this?

I think this is just more evidence that Will Anderson won’t be our cup of tea in the draft…Flus wants us to be big up front…if Jones is playing mostly DE he is doing it at about 285lbs next year…this DL will be bigger and more physical than we have seen in a long time come 2023.

Cunningham as our primary backup for 2023 would concern me, but I love him as a long term potential QB2 and 2023 scout team guy.

Oh yeah.  I misunderstood,  in no way do I want anything more for Cunningham than a small handful of plays or to be a handout specialist in blowouts in 2023. Someone else would definitely need to be the #2 next season.

I think both hit the market just purely as a business decision...the Eagles are super deep on the DL...Washington have money and resources tied up on the DL with Allen on a decent sized contract and a guy like Sweat who will have to be paid at some point...plus Young down the line if he gets back to his best as well as using a 2nd round pick on Phidarian Mathis just creates a log jam of talent if you then resign Payne as well.

Agreed,  but imo you don't let Payne walk,  at least I wouldn't. I'd franchise and trade him first.  At the best you can get a compensatory pick when he walks,  so no better than the 33rd pick of the 3rd round.  There's no way I couldn't find someone who would give a 3rd or better for him. He's just too good and he's still young. At least that guarantees my pick too.

If it was that easy every team in the NFL would do it...if you franchise a guy with the intention of trading him and every team knows you are going to have to trade him then your leverage is gone and things become really messy...it's why year after year we see great players hit FA.

Are you saying you don't believe any team is willing to give a third for him?

So you think they are staying put in top 3 and taking Carter? or drop down a few and pick Tyree Wilson or Myles Murphy. Greg Gabriel really likes Wilson. And Carter. Stated on podcast that Carter is unlockable when motivated and Wilson is perfect DE for system, size and athlete.

Free agency will have a massive impact on what we do...if you are asking me today right now I am taking Carter because of how important that UT position is...if we sign Daron Payne & Dre'Mont Jones who can line up at DE on early downs and UT next to Payne who would shift over to NT on passing downs then I could be convinced to move down a little and grab one of these guys...that said the idea of having the likes of Payne, Jones & Carter in there on early downs is palpable.

I am saying you barely ever see anything but elite players get tagged and traded...Payne is very good but not elite...I think history just tells us it is rare.

I just don't see the logic. Who is so prideful that they are sure they will draft a player in the 3rd better than Payne? Yes you have to pay him, a bunch of teams will be willing to and maybe half say they can't right up front. But this potentially eliminates  a bidding war. I mean Velus Jones for Payne? Hell yes I'm making that trade. Payne vs 4 more years of Monty on a rookie deal? Not even a thought and I'm signing for it.

I mean look at the roster and ask who you wouldn't trade straight up for Payne. I've got Fields and that's it. Braxton looks like a potential stud at LT so he is probably the only person that even gives me pause.

As far as them being elite, who exactly? Clowney, Yannick, Dee Ford, Landry and Frank Clark all were tagged and traded and none are guys I would immediately call elite. I can't say I know I wouldn't take any of them over Payne since it may be revisionist to a degree, but I don't believe any of them were better than Payne or actually elite.

Again I just don't see it happening...you have a few examples of it happening but that is dwarfed by the amount of guys who simply hit FA every year...

Thankfully we will soon see how it plays out.

I think that is more about our edge play has been bad and Jones is probably been best DL.

Every part of that DL has been terrible man...moving **** around still leaves you with **** just in different places...Jones should make for a good rotational DT next season but nothing more.

They still have to play games in the now.  Hence moving guys around.

DL is probably are greatest team need going into 2023.  It needs a lot.   It is historically bad at moment.

I think you need at least 2 real good players on D line in order to be considered a good team.
