Giants Starting Geno Smith

You keep saying this like it means anything. There isn’t some NFL rule that says you have to start a different QB if you plan on playing a rookie. They’re starting Geno because they want Geno to play.

Yeah they want both to play. You guys keep saying "omg Geno's the starter over Eli" like Geno's in there as the only QB playing or that expect him to be leading the team to a victory instead of Eli. That's not the case. They offered Eli the start and were going to play all three. Geno is the starter because someone had to be and the one who they were going to let start declined.

It's not about trying to "win the season".  It's about trying to at least compete, so that when you throw a guy like Davis Webb in there, you can actually see what you've got.  How are you even supposed to evaluate a rookie QB like that when you've sent out a clear signal to the rest of the team around them that nobody cares at all, and are fully willing to throw away snaps for some sentimental Eli streak because "who cares what happens now?"

It somehow manages to add a fully extra layer of meaninglessness, futility, and goof-off ****ery to the remainder of an already awful lost season.

The same way you evaluate players normally? Like I don't get what this is supposed to mean. Webb and Smith are still taking snaps and running plays that are designed to work against legit NFL defenses that have something to play for. You can get a fine evaluation of them that way.

Like I said, how the heck can you evaluate a rookie QB in this mess? How? You're setting him up to fail. You don't start a QB in that respect. "Here rookie, you're in now. Let's see what you're really made of". If the Giants are still hell bent on winning games, and why would they at this point, and you don't wanna throw a rookie in the fire then this is dumb as you might as well let Eli finish the season and slowly bring in the rookie. As Eli far and away still gives you the best chance to win. The more I think about it, the more I think this is just tanking because they know what Geno is really. And he isn't gonna be better than Eli at all, especially with the dump around him

They are playing Webb. It's been said a dozen times in this thread.

I don't see how the Giants have less of a chance winning with Geno than Eli when 1 of their 2 victories was basically a field goal competition. They're the second lowest scoring offense in the league so far. There's only so much worse then can get. They struggled offensively against the 1 win 49ers. You people are overstating how this looks like "they can't compete" when they weren't competing or moving the ball with Eli.

well it depends what offensive approach we are going to have. Geno isn't going to move the ball and in a situation where he has to throw he's more liable to put the defense in a tougher position with turnovers. So yeah it can get worse.

Especially if Eli declined starting and they aren't going to play all 3.

Eli declined starting to the extent they would start him to keep the streak alive and then bench him. Any self-respecting competitor would do the same. This team has no business benching Eli for Geno. It's a disrespectful move.

So they're become the 32nd worst scoring offense instead of the 31st? Okay. Wow. Such a fall a grace

Forget the starter tag. That’s not really the point. This team has somehow decided to give snaps to Geno Smith over Eli. Geno Smith, who clearly isn’t the long term answer, will be taking snaps because ...they want to give all the Quarterbacks some plays.

They have 5 games to decide if Davis Webb is worth looking at as a long term solution, and they’re going to get a good look at him by...letting Geno Smith take some of the snaps. Oh and Eli can have some of them if he wants too.

Either go with the QB most likely to lead your team to wins, go with the journeyman who maybe can give the team a spark, or go with the unknown to find out what you have. This planned game of musical chairs where you’re playing all three sides is just stupid.

Yeah... it's either stick with Eli or start Davis Webb. There is enough tape on Geno Smith to know that he isn't a franchise caliber QB.

The headline that Eli has been benched for the rookie to see what they have in him looks a lot better than putting in another vet who is worse for... not really any reason at all

Maybe but this is business. Eli hasn't really gotten it done since his last Super Bowl 6 years ago and this might go down as the worst Giants season ever.
