I'm fairly new to mafia as well, so I'm not sure if there are other ways to win, but from what I've read so far, yes mafia and town are pretty much battling it out who's left standing. Others usually have their own win conditions I believe. Sometimes others are also civ or mafia aligned and can help either side, like a vigilante/serial killer, but they can also have their own win conditions separate from that of town's/mafia's too.
