Couple things there...

If I'm a GM, I want Love knowing he's got a kicker that can handle the pressure of a FG in the last few seconds to win.  And that is Crosby.  Who knows what you get with a rookie.  And it could be that you need to find the rookie and just stick with him, as GB did Crosby.

Second....the snap and holder.  Oh my.  Yes!  You need a cohesive unit.  A snapper that can get the ball back, quickly and on the right spot.  The holder needs to hold it at different angles depending on field position and length.  All of those are practiced.  Bojo was about the worst holder I remember seeing.  And it led to those poor attempts.  Our new punter is a much better holder.  There are a ton of really intricate details that go into field goal kicking that you are missing.  They seem small, but I assure you, they are not.

That thing has to be a well oiled machine.

NO problem Vegas we can disagree a bit on that some of that and this is my reasoning. I get yours, we just are on different sides. If i was GM my thoughts would be.........

I need a better legged kicker, I don't care if Love has confidence in him or not. It's year one, Love will deal with it ilke he'll deal with many other ups and downs year 1. I mean as a GM if i'm worried about confidence in a new kicker how do I trust Love over AR. Same thing to a degree right?

At some point we have to retool, and spending more money on a kicker when we're looking to dump salary and vets is well, going against what Gute has already done. A number of other players won't be resigned, Crosby likely will be in the same group. Just makes sense to do it now, if Love loses a game based on a missed kick early in his career he'll know where that loss gets put to. I would hope he's strong enough mentally to do that.

I think the past snapper and holder were adequate enough. Crosby's leg is the issue not the holder or snapper.

I just can't blame it on the others, again being a kicker for many years and getting older. It's Crosby's leg, that's the issue.

Ppl still reaching back a few years to the DET game to try to bury Crosby?  lol.

Guy is a great dude, he's just lived his life out in GB. I don't think anyone moving on from him is brurying him. He's got leg issues, on KO and likely wants to much money. Unless he's cheap it's time to retool, we've let a few others walk away that are much younger and would have potentially had a big impact. Tonyan, Lazard. I mean the writing is on the wall. Everyone knew the day would come, when AR was sent to pasture or another team the retool and cap fix year was required. Purge the roster of age and salary and fill in all thos epositions with youth that are cheap. TT did it that way and Gute will do the same.

I brought it up and response to remembering a game that Crosby lost us but I don't believe I was in any way burying him

Tbh I didn’t mean you specifically but there have been others who specifically use that game to do so.

He was 25/29 last season. 24/25 up to 49 yds.  1/4 from 50+ isn’t so great obviously.

He may not have much power on kickoffs but the grass is greener idiom def holds weight for kickers in the league.  We’ve seen countless teams struggle to find any consistency and go through kickers like Pete Davidson goes through chicks.

Punters can be trained to kick off and kicking off deep is the easiest thing to do.  So you can bring Crosby back and still have the leg you want on kickoffs, if you want.

The past snapper and holder (Bojo) were not adequate.  That isn't even debatable.  Bojo was about the worst holder I've seen.  Couldn't place the ball right and couldn't even get the laces in the right spot.  (Laces out, Dan!) We got rid of both of them.  Coco was a little better as a snapper, but the ball still wasn't get back there fast enough.  Odonnell (punter) was a fine holder.  Which is why Crosby had a better year last year.

Now...it seems we disagree on the little things like the skills of the specialists in the past.

I'm not opposed to getting a new kicker.  At all.  It is highly likely that we will have a new snapper and the better holder in O'Donnell.  So getting a new kicker makes sense in that he can grow with those guys as his specialists and get to be that well oiled machine that is much needed.

I mean, there is a reason why backup QB's are no longer holders.  They are watching the 1's work while getting a few reps themselves and running the scout team looks.  That snapper, holder and kicker should be getting a lot of work in while the others work on offense and defense.

Haha Finkle Dam that was a funny movie.........that was good.

We are at an impasse I can't get on board with that. Make a punter kick to cover Crosby's poor leg to justify paying him more than we should or more than a rookie. Just not what I see Gute doing unless it's at a vet min. Was it not Gute who offered Nelson a pretty low offer prior to his departure to Oakland? Same thing here Vegas, i get it he's liked well respected and done well. Just doesn't make sense when retooling to hold onto him. Unless it's bottom dollar.

According to ESPN Wisconsin, the Packers asked Nelson to take a pay cut from his 2018 base salary of $9.25 million down to the veteran minimum -- $1.1 million. The Packers cleared $10.25 million in cap space by releasing Nelson and they promptly signed tight end Jimmy Graham and defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson.

I like Crosby, this year I like him better somewhere else unless he takes something like posted above, even then I'd have a hard time not looking at a younger leg that could grow into the job like Crosby did after his draft.

I don't think we've disagreed much in the past I don't post enough and find your takes to be very objective and often could say the same thing as you posted just not nearly as articulately.

True but when do you move on? After Love shows us he's the man and then we have to train up a new kicker, if you're burning it down do it now me thinks. Let the kid grow just like Crosby did back when we turned over the team to AR. I don't hate on Crosby myself he's been great even with his down turns, but at some point the future has to come. My own thought is do it this year on a throw away year. I mean reminds me of AR's first year same type of thing.

sorry to jump in Thrill I did not bring up detroit, i woudl have brough up the bengals game;). But same thing.

I don't get bringing Jordy into a conversation regarding a kicker....  But if your premise is that we move on from older dude, I totally get it.

And again....I'd rather GB draft a kicker, too.  And then hedge their bet by also signing a UDFA kicker or two.

But, if they do hang onto Crosby, you can get endzone kickoffs by punters.  It happens enough in the NFL.  And usually in situations like this when the kicker either doesn't have the leg anymore or he's dinged up and just can't do it.

It's just this....snappers and holders.  They have a lot to do with the success of that unit.  Crosby had a terrible year with a slow snapper and a poor holder.  Last year he was good with an okay snapper and very good holder.  It is no coincidence.
