We're 100% sure Al hasn't possessed Gruden right?

Nope, this is Gruden's revenge tour for being traded.

To pay a 3rd round pick is one thing.   But man, if you are cutting him because he's getting suspended before even playing a game, well, you'd think maybe to ensure that he's getting suspended.   Sounds like an appeal was won that changed the outcome here - but either way, OAK lucks out to get him back, after cutting him loose.   LOL's all the way around (although I can't fault the decision to re-sign him if he's not getting suspended, only the original decision clearly being premature).

I would hardly call Oakland lucky here

Question here is what is the NFL doing? There has been this looming suspension rumor with Bryant for over 3 months. Then, on cut down, it  resurfaces and the Raiders are wanting an answer before releasing him and can't get one. And it's still up in the air.

How can the NFL seemingly screw with a player that way? Over 3 months, and you've still got no decision on this?

Guessing they suspend him next week just to continue this troll job.....

Was there any cap penalty for releasing him?

PIT took on all the cap dead money with the trade IIRC, it was a non-guaranteed salary anyways because of the prior suspension.

Either way, though, OAK retains his rights for 1 season before he becomes a UFA.    It's just a question of when that last season happens.

Given that he's expected to play Week 2, one would think that the NFL filed notice on a successful appeal.  Remember, we don't hear about any suspension until the appeal is done - and while it's possible an appeal is still in the works, if the appeal was won, then we'd get zero word, too.   And Bryant would just keep playing.

Given all of that, it's kind of like having the sword of Damocles hanging over him, but each game that he plays, the more likely an appeal was won.  But we won't ever know if it was, at least unless Bryant discloses (because even the team doesn't get notified until the appeal is done and suspension is official - the only person to get the news is the player and his agent, and for obvious reasons, they don't usually have any reason to make this info public).

What a bizarre situation. Let's see if it pays off for them, Cotton.

He's a very talented player, but seems to be even dumber than Josh Gordon. And unlike Gordon, he's a diva and a distraction aside from the drug stuff.

1 year deal is a true shame, considering that by next year Gruden will probably manage to get Favre out of retirement.
