Hence why the qb, especially in the above cases, gets all the credit for wins and season outcomes.
N4L
I have the solution to end the punting problem: Ticky-tacky flags on 3rd down that are automatic first downs! Sneeze on a QB? FIRST DOWN. Fart next to the ref? FIRST DOWN So easy, every officiating crew in the NFL should be able to do it
Malfatron
If the coach says to the ref "pass as good as a punt", then the rule changes so if a forward pass hits the ground inbounds, it instantly gets treated like a punt. *no muff rules apply. if a defensive player tips the ball down, the ball is still in play and can be advanced by the defense. if the offense recovers it, the play is over but the defense reatining possesion. this will allow more hail marys to happen, which are exciting. also, some fun punt returns. also will eliminate a need for a punter. the reason the coach has to say " pass as good as a punt" is that sometimes you dont want to treat a pass like a punt, maybe on like a 4th and 3 where you dont want the defense to return an incomplete pass (or if youre at the goalline)

Or you can only punt when you're inside your 40. These types of arbitrary cutoffs will only incentivize distorted behavior IMHO. If it's 3rd and 17 from my own 42, for example, maybe a coach would take a knee off the shotgun to get it within his own 40 so he could punt it and flip the field. I'm still not a fan of the go for two/XP back at the 15 distinction.

What about some of these super serious ideas: Punters and kickers don't count towards the 11 player on the field limit (NFL actually writing down that kickers and punters aren't football players) Punting it through the goalposts is worth 2 points. Punting a doink is worth 4 points unless it goes in, then it's only 2. Every time someone does an Australian style punt, they have to yell "crickey" Punt returns are no longer a thing, however, the receiving team can elect to either catch the ball to move it forward 5 yards, OR, and wait for it because this is a big one, kick the ball back before it lands. If they kick, the ball is spotted where it lands after the second kick. If they kick it all the way back to the endzone, that's a TD.

MacReady
Just eliminate the kickers altogether. Have a punt be the QB throwing the ball. Wherever it hits is where the other team starts their drive. Nobody likes special teams anyway.

TXsteeler
I think they should eliminate the punt and force teams to go for it on 4th down. Also, eliminate the stupid as hell kickoffs that get kicked out of the endzone almost every time. Teams now start with the ball at the 50 yard line and have to go for it on 4th downs. Go 4 and out after getting 8 yards and the other team gets it at their 42 yard line. If after a few different possession changes your team starts with the ball on your own 5 yard line and only gets 3 yards, the other team starts with 1st and goal at the 8 yard line. This adds the strategy of going for a kick or going for it on fourth down and being willing to give it back to the other team, expecting that your defense can get you the ball back quickly (in terms of yards) enough to make it worth it to keep the ball down at that end of the field and go for a TD. Scoring goes up but dominant defenses can carry even harder. Might turn a lot of games into very one sided affairs though.
