His career record is 51-53. I don't care what people try to prove. He is a mediocre franchise QB and doesn't deserve to be paid at that level. It just goes to show how important a franchise QB is that the Lions had no choice but to pay him, otherwise, another desperate QB team would have gobbled him up.

The Lions have had one of the worst owners in pro football, very mediocre FO's and for years, their scouting department was full of Ford's cronies who were incompetent. It definitely hindered all their player's development and is the main reason players like Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson quite earlier than expected.

This franchise along with the Browns and Jacksonville remain laughing stocks around the NFL.

Such a strange post.  You started off by holding the team record against him, then pointed out how terrible the organization has been.  You know, the entity responsible for... putting talent around him.  Somehow, and despite the terrible organization and supporting cast, this team has made it to the playoffs three times with Stafford at QB, and he has posted some significant stats over the years.  But he doesn't deserve to be paid like one of the top 10-15 QBs?

Quote
  • Matthew Stafford ranked second in his comeback win against the Cardinals, suffering from a league-high five dropped passes, which masked his accurate day passing. He also threw away three passes over the game. His drop rate of 12.2 percent actually did not lead the league this year, because…

His accuracy has improved every season. He had very few turnovers last year until he broke his throwing hand the last 4 games. Even his pick 6 against Arizona was a timing route that Golden Tate got pushed off of when the ball was in the air. His decision making and even footwork in the pocket has been stellar for a few seasons now.

He was pretty garbage when Joe Lombardi was OC, but has been on fire since Jim Bob Cooter has taken over. I expect as long as he's healthy and paired with Jim Bob Cooter, things will continue to improve.

Lombardi's scheme was a nightmare for this supporting cast, relying on a mediocre offensive line and complex blocking scheme to try and provide ample time in the pocket for vertical routes to develop.  It's why Stafford immediately improved with Cooter, who recognized the strengths of the team and ran the offense accordingly.

Isn't this where we say "every QB deals with the same number of drops and throws the same number of passes away, so Stafford isn't unique.  Just look at [insert future HOF QB here], he overcomes those same flaws with lesser players and lesser protection.  Stafford is overrated."

Just trying to figure this thing out.

Derek Carr's career record is 23-25. He's the second highest paid player in the NFL.

Andrew Luck's career record is 46-30. He's the third highest paid player in the NFL... but let's be real. He's 10-12 in the last two seasons.

Carson Palmer's career record is 90-88. He's the fourth highest paid player in the NFL.

Your top four highest paid players in the NFL have a combined record of 210-196. Clearly  your problem isn't with Stafford and the Lions. It's with the NFL in general.

Are Marcus Mariota, Jameis Winston, and Derek Carr mediocre franchise QBs as well? They all have losing NFL records.

Going by win percentages, Wilson and Roethlisbeger are close - which I believe they are in terms of ability - but following right behind those two are Joe Flacco and Aaron Rodgers (all guys .60+). Behind them? Matt Ryan, Alex Smith, Eli Manning, Drew Brees, Andy Dalton, Cam Newton, and Phillip Rivers (all above .50, but below .60).

Other QBs with more wins than losses: Teddy Bridgewater, Matt Moore, Matt Schaub, Tyrod Taylor, Drew Stanton, TJ Yates, Trevor Siemian, Brock Osweiler, Carson Palmer, Mark Sanchez. Other than Palmer and Bridgewater, who are the franchise QBs in that group?

My point is, there are bad QBs with good records and good QBs with bad records. There are good-not-great QBs that are on par with guys who are much better than them. It happens, especially with instability in the FO, which you acknowledged Detroit has had for a long time.
