I agree with Uglem on this one. If Burks' season is gone though, I think Gute will let him go. He hasn't been shy to give up on certain draft picks that haven't panned out and Burks and Jones will be in that group. We need results now and if guys are injury prone, we're not going to wait around for them unless they've proven themselves on the field. Burks and Jones have not, ergo they're expendable.

Stahp.  We're not releasing a player going into his sophomore year simply because he hurt himself.  Since Brian Gutekunst was officially named GM early in 2018, he's been in charge of the 2018 and 2019 NFL draft.  The only 2018 draft picks (aside from Cole Madison who is the exception) to not make the 53 man roster to start the year was James Looney and Kendall Donnerson, both of whom were 7th round picks.  If you believe that Gute was the one pulling the strings for the 2017 draft, I believe only Vince Biegel and Davante Mays were the only two players who were rostered in 2017 but were released in 2018.  Again, Mays was a 7th round pick.  If you want to use Vince Biegel as your "example" for Burks, I'd very much disagree with you since Burks was slated to play a big role and Biegel wasn't.

It's been two drafts, right????  I get moving on from late round picks, but Burks isn't a late round pick.  I get moving on from guys who lack elite ability, but Burks has elite ability.  And Gute drafted Burks.  It isn't like this was a player he inherited.  This is a player that he drafted.

I'm no fan of his, but even I know that he isn't being cut this year.

I get it, but Gute just cut a guy who we traded up for and didn't pan out mainly due to injury. I could see Burks getting let go due to the severity of the injury and/or the fact that it's a recurrent injury.

The "we" bolded above wasn't Gute.

GM's tend to be more loyal and patient with "their" guys.

I get your point about Burks, and I'm not a huge fan, but there's no way Gute gets rid of one of his that he traded up for, with an intriguing skillset, this quickly.

I'm probably going to get slammed but I'm done with Burks. ILB isnt a position you get much better at. You either have it or you don't. You should flash from day one. I HATED his tape from Vanderbilt

Summers is UP!!!

Nah... You're just another hater running an agenda. It's the same nonsense posted on message boards forever; it's irrelevant... A quick FYI for ya, you're not "done with Burks".  For that to be the case, you'd have had to been a proponent, not a hater.

Classic cwood, refusing to cut players on rookie contracts.

Moar:

But Burks received a second opinion from a specialist and said Tuesday he was told surgery would not be necessary and he would be able to return this season. It doesn’t appear it will be necessary to put him  on injured reserve.”

8 weeks, if that's the timetable, would be roughly around week 4 or 5?

Assuming he can still run and keep in shape during those 8 weeks.  Can't imagine a torn pectoral would require him to abstain from some good ol' fashion cardio during the interim.

Acme Packing: Because the Packers do not yet have a timetable for Burks’ return, the linebacker could still end up on injured reserve. The team can place him on IR once final cuts conclude on Aug. 31, allowing Burks the opportunity to return to the roster once a minimum of eight weeks have passed. Green Bay took that approach this past year, placing wide receiver Jake Kumerow on IR on Sept. 3 and activating him off IR on Dec. 1.

It does not appear the Packers plan to replace Burks with a player from outside the organization. Since the injury, Bolton has spent the most time with the No. 1 defense in practice. Summers also remains a replacement candidate, as do Crawford and hybrid safeties Raven Greene and Josh Jones.

Very interesting.  We'll see.  None of them seems to know, so patience.  And young guy like this, want to make sure he's fully healed and ready.  But Gute "hoping" "short-term" is encouraging (although of course we can hope all kinds of unrealistic things....).  But 3 more weeks of camp, plus 8 weeks IR, that doesn't seem "short term" to me, really.  Still, if that was comfortable and gave him more than full time to be super 100% good, and then he still had full 2nd half, that would be a pretty good opportunity.

Great news.  :)
