Was posted by a 49er fan in our forum. Thought it was worth bringing up in here. Weird sort of situation given how tiny the TE market is; he could crush that market (13m/yr) and still 100% be underpaid by a fair margin. Given what he does as a blocker, what he does for the run game, and then is our number one receiver, you can easily argue he's worth good wide receiver money.

I just feel like this happens every year with TEs....

Chiefs got Travis Kelce on such a good deal. Talk about transcending what a TE does.

The AFCW TE corp is nuts. Kelce, Waller, Henry, Fant... talk about an elite division of TE's.

Waller's contract is looking like a massive steal too. Hope he can replicate season one as even with the addition of Ruggs/Williams getting healthy, Renfrow... he's our #1 receiving option.

Y’all are definitely trying to catch up to us. We’ll see how far it gets everybody once things start to shake out. Kelce is still number one at least for now.

I’m really starting to like the caliber of weapons in general in the AFC West. Really stacking the deck on offense to give yourselves a fighting chance.

Then saying something like"I feel like this happens every year with tight ends" is weird because there hasn't been a big money tight end in a while

Because the story is always the same... "player X is a great TE, should be payed like a WR..." and they never do.

It sucks, but has been like so for years, and I don't see it changing.

I can remember that happening one time tbh, Jimmy Graham. That's it. And that was what, 5+ years ago?

Gronk signed his deal in 2012 (and got by far the biggest NFL contract for a tight end in history), and kelce signed his deal in 2016, when he had yet to hit 900 yards in a season. Ertz signed his extension at almost the same time, and like kelce, his best season was 75 / 850. There seriously hasn't been a worthy free agent at the position since then, so I really am not sure what you're talking about. Nobody was arguing that about Hooper.

With like five or six exceptions, I think you absolutely can.

I'm not saying he won't go there.  I'm just saying if he goes there, it'll be for the money.

Clowney has already said on several occasions that playing for a contender legitimately means something to him (he wouldn't accept a trade to a loser last year and has indicated to Miami he's not interested in negotiating with them this offseason for that very reason). While I do see Cleveland offering him the most money (hence my prediction he'll end up there), I don't think that decision would be made unless he believes the Browns can be a playoff team.

It's definitely been a topic talked about more recently with Gronk too. There were several offseasons over the past 5 years where he's hinted at wanting a new deal, or holding out. Subtle stuff. But much like Brady, he unfortunately also never totally had the sack to take Kraft all the way to the wall.

I would love for one of these tight ends to finally get the spine to hold out for a contract comparable to a wide receiver. First of all, they should explain to the team that they can save a little on the margins on the WR corps since the TE is essentially the #1 target. Furthermore, for Kittle's part, he also does more for the team since he's also cracking skulls closer to the LoS.

If I'm Kittle I'm telling them to use the Amari Cooper contract as a framework.

Yep, and he should get that much. He is a top-5 receiving TE and the best non-specialist in the league at blocking (IE: removing the guys that are designated 6th OL for the most part, and even then Kittle is better than most). Cooper is overpaid to begin with, so maybe 18M per is what Kittle should look for.

He is a transcendent talent at that position, and given the style that SF plays, you could argue that he is their most important player on either side of the ball pretty easily. And while it may sound nuts, that personality he brings really seems to be a huge in building the culture on that team. Its a truly valuable quality.

I think its more or less the fact that the market hasnt caught up to 'pass catching' TEs that are all over the place in todays NFL. The pay structure for TEs (outside of Hooper) largely are outdated and make still feel like it centers around traditional in-line TEs who are blockers first.

Guys (rightfully so) like Gronk/Kelce/Kittle/Ertz play with the impact of a WR1 or WR2 but are still sitting in the wrong pay bracket despite their playmaking ability on the field.

Its going to take 1 of those guys to really break the bank and reset the market for all future TEs who become a teams #1/#2 receiving option
