I thought about that the other day, Fitz for sure.  Would even consider trading Joseph after that since I think Fitz's best spot is a Honey Badger FS

If I am drafting a safety in the top ten, he better be Earl Thomas, Eric Berry or Sean Taylor. I just don't see special with Fitz. I see a versatile, good all around player but I don't see special.

Im a big fan of Rasheem Green from USC. If we can get him at 41, I'll be stoked. I like him better than Taven Bryan and others.

I really like him myself honestly I didn't even know nothing about him till your post.He looks like a beast out there 6"4 275 lbs and can play inside & out he definitely got my vote and round two

Draft James or Fitz and flip Joseph for a second rounder

Not going to get a 2nd for Joseph.  Should have been drafted in the 2nd and in the best case scenario we would get a 3rd.  Probably have to add a 5th or 6th to get that and I would much have RM drafting in the 5th or 6th than the 2nd.

Derwin James might be the best player in this draft. with a team that needs talent in defense hard to pass that man up if he is on the board. James could be another Sean Taylor or Landon Collins a 10 year cornerstone.. http://www.nfl.com/draft/2018/profiles/derwin-james?id=2560066

I wouldn't pass on James because of Obi. Obi could be moved to corner or mlb or whatever for James

Derwin James should play linebacker for the Raiders if they draft him. Obi Melifonwu showed more at UConn as a true safety than James showed at FSU. It should also be said that James pales in comparison athletically to Melifonwu.

I would not mind a three safety alignment with James, Melifonwu, and Joseph.  Would need a good x and o coach to make sure we hide each players deficiencies.  I think Joseph could cover slot receivers and RBs.  Just stop trying to cover TEs that have almost a 2 foot catching radius advantage.  No matter how good his coverage is he will need the QB to make a mistake to win.

I'm leaning toward Hurst at this point. He perfectly fits the scheme and fills a huge need. A 3T would have more impact than a LB in the 4-3. And i don't want another DB for a 3rd straight draft.

I remember hearing how overrated he is/was. He flashes here and there but for the most part is just an alright prospect. People want to compare him to Donald but he is a very, very poor mans Donald.

Any truth to this?

He's not Donald, no one is. He can be Atkins or Casey.

With Nelson being added to the S group it brings up how we will use all these guys and how it affects value in the draft. Here are some thoughts I had on that.

Gilchrist best season came at FS for the Jets(2015). They played a similar system to PG and the Bengals. Many want Karl Joesph in this position for us but I think Gilchrist fits more because he is better in coverage. I think people want KJ there because of his size but that isn't the player he has proven to be IMO. Gilchrist can play slot corner at a pretty high level as well because of his coverage background which helps his value for us as we don't have anyone better for the position on the roster atm. Wright is just depth IMO.

Joesph reminds me of Bob Sanders. Sanders played SS mostly and was a missile like KJ is. They are both were/are good in run support and played close to the line a bunch. Downhill players. Undersized but strong and aggressive.

Obi was best in college as a part of a duo of safeties playing 2 high or in nickel he would cover slot wrs and close to make plays in the flat or whatever. That was where he was best. Now with his added weight I was thinking those techniques could translate to him playing a hybrid FS/WLB/Roamer as he has some corner like skills in coverage, size and speed = range and likes to close with the play in front of him. Teach him to to shed effectively like Telvin Smith with his length and use his speed to make plays sideline to sideline.

Now Fitz is a true FS. He can play slot and corner and in the box some but his best position is as a high safety, either single high or part of a 2 high. He is very good in this role. If he were drafted by us he and Gilchrist would compete for FS role IMO.

James is a 6'3 211. He played SS in 2 high a lot for FSU but also played in the box some as most safeties that hit do. I look at his game coming out of college as what we hope Obi develops into now. After looking him pretty close today and yesterday I'm not sure why some have him dropping toward the end of the 1st. He is a top 12 talent and a steal if gotten anywhere past that. These QB needing teams can really affect the draft haha.

So with all this said, is Fitz's value at FS to us better than Vea's value on the interior or Smith's value at WLB or Edmunds value at MLB. It's hard to say.

If Bowman is brought back than we are in the same boat at MLB as we are at FS.

If Cory James and Obi(?) can handle WLB than we have versatility at WLB as well.

Vea's value looks strong as well when looking at the dline. Our interior could really use a versatile and powerful guy like him. Vanderdoes looks like he'll be ready for camp. Edwards should be a base DE in a 4-3 like he was as a senior in college. It was where he fits the best when you go back and look at that tape. We have Jelly at NT and Hestor and Lathum behind them. Ward has to prove he has value still. I think he can if he progresses. He has the length PG likes and the strength to hold the edge. He is nearly identical in size as Carradine, who is signed to a one yr deal. I think the plan is for Edwards and Ward to play DE with Mack in the future and Irvin will be a pass rush specialist.
