Mafia is the general term for a subset of people within the game that know each other's roles and work together via discord. Typically, whoever is mafia at the beginning of the game stays that way throughout. Very rarely will people be added to a mafia group as an ability to add to their numbers is almost always going to result in an overly strong mafia group and an unfair game. Cult is a separate enemy faction that usually starts with one player. This player then has the ability to add to their numbers through some recruitment method (conversion, infection, etc). Cults are not included in most mafia games as they are very very tough to balance properly. Games are not consistent with cult rules from game to game. Some allow convertees to enter chat and some don't. Some allow convertees to keep their abilities while some are forced to be vanilla. All the mafia games on this site are unique. So mafia can actually cult townspeople. This is literally the most scum sided game I have ever seen. Town is going to get wrecked. But its all fun and there will be a new game right after the draft.
