I have nothing to say about who should be the new DC, but I like the move for a different reason.

When an organisation hires a new coach (in this case La Fleur), that HC then goes and looks at who is available for his coordinators and position coaches. He is competing with every other new head coach (and some longer standing ones) in what is a limited talent pool. As a new head coach he also lacks some gravitas (essentially pulling power) that comes with success.

As a consequence, he will never get all the right guys first time around. THIS is why I want to see a new(ish) HC change some of his coaches in the first few years. La Fleur now has a much more powerful voice in attracting coaches because of his success, and he also has a new talent pool each year to choose from, to upgrade his worst coaches. This does not seem to be an organisation (at least it doesn't now) that gets cronies in (like McCarthy inviting Nolan to be the DC in Dallas) or one that allows under-performers to hang around indefinitely (hello Dom).

La Fleur's decision (to release Mennenga and not re-sign Pettine) is, I think, a good sign that he is still very active in improving his staff. It also sends a message to the whole organisation that if you underperform, you will be held to account, be it a coach or a player.  Although the timing was bad (a lot of teams that never made the playoffs have already picked the low-hanging fruit), it's still good stuff to see, going forward.

A coordinator must be extremely knowledgeable, with good emotional intelligence, be sharp as a tack, mature, flexible, even keeled, eloquent and for a lack of a better word not meatheady.

I wonder who on my list fits this criteria.

New England always had solid defenses with marginal talent. A lot of their DC's  went on to get head coaching jobs. They all failed as head coaches but were successful DC's in NE. Spags in KC is another DC that runs a system I like. Maybe we could grab a young disciple from one of those coaching trees.

Someone new who wants to be a head coach.

If it’s some failed former head coach I’m right back to leaving.

Stephen Belichick, defence player caller for the Pats the last two seasons. Let him be our DC for the next three seasons and then he can head back to Boston and take over form his papa.
