That's like, pennies. How can someone NOT like this?

Seriously, waiting to hear arguments for paying a guy this little. What's the downside? Do you really think that WFT is now out of the QB market because they resigned a guy for less than $5mm/yr?

Yeah, I filtered by "veteran status" to remove the rookie contracts from the equation, so you'd get something like this:

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/rankings/average/quarterback/veteran/

If you view Case Keenum as an average/above average backup QB in the NFL, which I think most would agree with, then he's making $6 million. Heinecke is directly below him, and directly below him is Chase Daniel. From there, things falloff pretty quickly in the Chad Henne/Nathan Peterman range.

TH's problem has always been staying healthy, and even in his big game against Tampa he managed to get himself injured by not protecting himself. Hopefully it was just him putting it all out there for the playoffs, because he'll need to learn to protect himself if he wants to start more than 2 games at a time.

People seem to ignore the value of having a guy who understands your system and sits in the QB room every week, watching film with your starter and coaching staff and crafting up the weekly plans.

Guys like Heineke will never get a starting gig and play above his pay grade, but he'll be a psuedo QB Coach, providing extra insight to every gameplan and serving as another set of eyes to rely on.

Having a quality backup that can also provide a spark and give you an opportunity to win vs. "OH NOOOOOO!!!!" is also extremely valuable. Ask Fitzpatrick, Kelly Holcomb, Nick Foles, etc.

They may not be viable long term, but they don't have to be. They just have to weather the storm.

I think after that playoff game you have to at least see what you have in this guy.  This is pennies for a QB so it's a good contract.  We have plenty of cap space too.  They traded for Kyle Allen last year and he will still be cheap this year.  I can't imagine we don't bring in at least 1 new face to the QB room in either a draft pick or a vet.  I think this contract spells the end for Alex Smith in Washington.

No.  Pennies would have been offering him the ERFA this year, and the RFA next year.  There really wasn't a good football reason to make this move.

He was a RFA not a ERFA.  You can't tender him original round cause he was an UDFA so someone could just steal him if they want.  2nd round tender would cost around 3.2 mil, plus you're getting the 2nd year in case he blows up and is awesome.  If not I expect there's an out for the 2nd year.  You're really going to quibble over $1 mil for a QB?
