Week 12 General Discussion Thread

Didn't think the Bengals had ever beaten the Steelers that bad, but indeed they did also have a 41-10 victory over the Steelers back in week 2 of the 1989 season. And that was already a week after that Steelers lost to the Browns 51-0 opening day in Pittsburgh. Remarkably, that team actually turned it around and made the playoffs at 9-7, and then won a playoff game against the division rival Houston Oilers. Even with 7 spots in today's playoffs, it's already looking grim for the Steelers to get to the postseason. Their remaining schedule down the stretch looks really rough, which was a talking point heading into the season. As an outsider I still want to believe in Tomlin making the most of the roster.

Bills...

go 2 from 3 there and I would agree with you.

Agree with this as well. Given the current state of the team, the Titans game was somewhat of an expected win. The Patriots were +7.5 favorites and despite the cover, the game was more competitive than that line would indicate. The Bills are inconsistent but have as high a ceiling as any team in the conference. The Colts are also a more formidable test, right now.

Colts are like the Vikings of the AFC. They cough up games in the end. Could be sitting with a high seed yet in a dogfight for the wild card spots.

Why is Tom Tolesco's job security not being questioned at all? He's been here for close to a decade and has nothing to show for it.

Here are some statistics about the Chargers during Tolesco's tenure (2013-Present)

  • We are 66-73 (.475 win %)
  • We've picked in the top 10 more times than we've made the playoffs. (3 times vs 2 times)
  • We've won 10+ games exactly once. We've lost 10+ games 3 times.
  • We've consistently had awful ST play under him. A few injuries seemingly makes us crumble in any given year. This is symptomatic of the fact that Tolesco is not good at drafting in later rounds and does a poor job at finding quality depth.
  • He's made 2 awful coaching hires (McCoy and Lynn). Both of them have failed miserably everywhere they've gone after leaving the team.

If Herbert ends up being his legacy that's not the worst thing in the world. But over a 9 year tenure he has given me zero reason to believe that he is the one who can actually build a SB caliber team. He's unaggressive to a fault. He doesn't draft particularly well unless it's with a pick inside the top 20. He's terrible at drafting O-lineman unless an elite prospect falls into his lap like Slater did. And despite the fact that we've spent 5 round 1-3 picks on the front 7 since 2018 they continue to be really bad week to week.

So why is it that his job security is never questioned? He's literally accomplished nothing. He's had above average QB play for most of his tenure with the organization, yet the Chargers have been a below average franchise in that span.

Last time Popper called someone out, aka Lynn, Spanos ended up firing them. Maybe it’ll work again lol.

The Chargers, as currently constructed by general manager Tom Telesco, are not ready to contend for a title, and that is because their roster is not deep enough. That was laid bare Sunday.

They do not have enough offensive line depth. They do not have enough cornerback depth. They do not have enough defensive line depth or safety depth. They do not have enough speed at wide receiver. They do not have productive running back depth behind Austin Ekeler. They do not have enough experience on special teams.

That falls on Telesco.

And the failures in key moments against the Broncos can all be traced back to that lack of depth.

If Titans have to sign another player because of the Monty Rice injury, they officially become the most injured team ever.

At least if the metric is number of players signed during a season.

And the team they beat is...the 2020 Niners, who beat....the 2019 Chiefs (I think?). It's just a new trend that more and more players in aggregate are getting injured.

They were tied with the Niners and a few others at 84 total players.

Titans are the only team in that group with a winning record, at least.

But yeah, injuries are getting more common.  So I guess let's add another game to the season!
