Cousins value and the next wave of big contracts

@Slateman Great summary. It's hard for me to imagine Cousins choosing the Redskins in the open market, but they can franchise him again if they want. It's a toughie. I think the Redskins should just admit their mistake and rebuild at the position. If I were a Redskins fan, I'd be very mad about the situation. As was evidenced last night and throughout this season, Cousins is easily worth franchise QB money.

Redskins will franchise/transition tag him. Gruden isn't going to let him hit the open market.

I don't know why people think the redskins are just going to let Cousins walk when they have no alternative at QB.

They can't really franchise him. And a transition tag doesn't guarantee they keep him.

They can franchise him teams are more than willing to shuffle around cap room for their star QBs. As of right now the redskins are supposed to have around 56 million in 2018 according to overthecap. They have some FAs they need to re-sign but no one absolutely crucial to re-sign outside of cousins and maybe an o-lineman or two.

If they don't want to franchise him, Transition tag him and force teams to make him a ridiculous offer you can always match.

They aren't going to franchise him and guarantee him $34+ million next year. He has all the leverage if they do that.

So? They have literally no alternative besides letting him walk for nothing and that would be ridiculously stupid, even for the redskins. Gruden and Allen are not going to let a franchise QB just hit the market.

Their alternatives are to let him walk or transition tag him. We agree that the transition tag is the best option. The franchise tag is not an option. They pained themselves in a corner here.

Yep they've definitely mismanaged this situation and should've paid cousins last offseason. Transition tag is the most likely but the franchise Tag even at it's ridiculous price is still an option.

It's not a realistic option. It gives Cousins all the leverage.

Washington loses regardless IMO. He's not signing a long term contract there. So either they pay him close to $30m for a single season or he leaves via FA/(maybe, maybe the) Transition Tag!

Either he eats up the vast majority of their remaining cap ($56m) or they have to start over and Draft a Rookie?

They've truly screwed the pooch on this whole situation. If Transitioned He's going to make more in a 3yr stretch then anyone in NFL history. More then any signing bonus, Guaranteed ?, ever included in a contract. That's what they created.

Kudos to Kirk for maximizing the money off their stupidity!!
