Pettine is as good of hire as could possibly have been hoped for.  The concerns being expressed just show that there truly isn't a name out there who would not leave a significant part of the fanbase unhappy.

Almost everyone here wanted someone outside the organization and we got our wish.  It will be interesting to see who fills out the entire defensive staff.

This is a good hire for the Packers. Pettine will bring in some fresh ideas and maybe the Packer players will grow into roles that he needs. There will be confusion, mistakes, and busted plays but by the fifth game we should see a significant change. There are two guys who I think will see expanded roles; Mt. Adams and Josh Jones. I really think they will be major head hunters in his defense.

Let’s say Pettine gives us a top 10-15 defense, maybe giving up some big games to HOF QBs but making it easy on everyone else.

With a Philbin offense again we’re easily 10-6 at the minimum, home field advantage as a possibility.

I think we’re all okay with that. I think our health would be the only question mark in the playoffs.

There won’t be ANY film of a Pettine lead Packers defense worth analyzing till next season, look at how D coordinators get their best rankings in year 1. I’m damn excited now. Excited!

I think the best way to describe my feelings toward this hire is guarded optimism.  I understand the love for Fangio and Bradley, and for Pettine.  It seems like the days of playing soft coverage is gone, or at the very least not overly used.

Looking at the DL, it seems like we have our obvious 3T in Mike Daniels and Nick Perry as the one DE.  The question I have is does Kenny Clark play the 0T or does he play strong-side 3T.  IIRC, Kris Jenkins was their nose tackle during the Jets days and he was north of 330 pounds.  I'd have to imagine that they'd prefer him at the 3T, but maybe @AlexGreen#20 could add his thoughts on this one.

Clay is the obvious SAM, and Blake Martinez is the MIKE in this one, but who plays WILL is the question.  I don't see a real obvious one on this one.

Seems like this scheme puts the CBs on an island a LOT.  And that's where Kevin King is probably a more natural fit.  Personally, I like Randall in more of a playmaking mode than straight-up over a receiver but I think he's capable.  This is going to ask a LOT out of HHCD, but I think Josh Jones moves into a more natural fit.

Yep .. the outside hire was big for me .. our coaches had been around for so long I didn't trust them any longer to actually evaluate themselves or the players.  We needed someone from the outside with a fresh perspective to evaluate the situation and then convey their thoughts to McCarthy/Gute.  I love that all of our opponents will have to throw away their books on us ... new unpredictable scheme will give us an advantage next year.

Based on what I have seen written up thus far on the new D scheme, I would have to say that there has to be momentum building for R Smith out of GA if he times well or Payne / Vea to team with Daniels, Clark, Adams and Lowry. Maybe wait on dline otherwise to get McKenzie a few rounds later.  I think Biegel will be ok in this defense in pass rushing situations but Fackrell might be gone. I think Gilbert has a shot too in this scheme. Am I reading those right?

I am in favor of adding to the secondary through FA- that group is already young. I hope they bring back Burnett and get a FA CB to go with the other young ones.

I still don't see the value in drafting a LB that high.  I'd honestly rather go spend that draft pick or money elsewhere.  One thought that rattled through my head is making Josh Jones the de facto WILL LB.  And that moves Randall into that SS role, and that they could use another boundary corner.

If Smith has 3 day ability and rush potential he should definitely be considered at 14. If he's purely an ILB with little rush or coverage potential then he shouldn't.

That’s if Burnett isn’t back. I have a feeling under Gutekunst he might be back on the request of Pettine and McCarthy.

Veteran leadership in the like...

Seen at least two articles today in so many words pointing out that Pettine scheme is complicated and it will be up to him to make it easy for players to learn.

This is where i'm having doubts about the hire. We all have seen over the past 5 years the communication breakdowns and confusion among our defenders time and time again. Surely MM noticed this too and I found it interesting to see he chose to hire yet another guy with a complicated defensive scheme. I strongly believed this was our opportunity to hire someone who could introduce an simpler yet effective defensive scheme and bring it more in-line with our draft and develop policy. Gus Bradley and Seattle's 4-3 under defence was right at the top of my list. Kris Richard was another guy we could've targeted had we known he was going to be let go.

We know that Pettine defensive scheme works and he had success with it but I hope it doesn't overwhelm our players as they have done under Capers. I'm hoping Pettine time out of the game and his time spent with Seattle allowed him to evaluate and incorporate new ideas to his scheme and to make it better and simpler. If he can successfully pull off a highly effective simplified 3-4 defence that would be fantastic for our team.

Pete Carroll during his time away from the NFL started to think about his ideas and philosophies and was inspired by several books that formed the basis of his coaching philosophy and his defensive scheme and brought it to Seattle. Hopefully something like that will happen for Pettine.

Are you invisioning Perry as a hand down DE? In A 3 or 4 man front?
