Packers Roster Cuts

Not going to lie the Defense worries me, but then again it has worried me for years.  Our pass rush with the decline of Matthews and the injury-prone Perry is a concern, we may have tightened up at the back a bit with our draft picks but with increasingly mobile QB's and schemes designed to use that to maximum effect and more of a quick shorter passing game it's all about buying time until the coverage inevitably breaks down as it can only cover for so long.  I think in this league you need both, a pass rush that can generate consistent pressure and force mistakes and ballhawks in the back to get that ball.

I think Pettine will get more out of this Defense, but I think we may be a season or two away from becoming a dominant unit under him.

I think until we move away from Matthews it will always be a problem, we have so much money tied into the position with Matthews and Perry so from a roster spending point of view I think it gets a pass even though we all know it's really a position of weakness.

Quarterbacks, left tackles and pass rushers get paid. That is just how it is and we aren't overpaying for Matthews or Perry. 10 million a year for a double digit sack guy is a bargain. A virtual steal in today's NFL economy. Having said that we do need a reliable pass rusher behind those two and it could be Gilbert. We shall see.

Nick Perry has played 6 years in the NFL. He has reached double digits in sacks just 1 time in those 6 years.

Clay Matthews last recorded double digit sacks in 2014, most of them while playing inside linebacker. He has reached double digit sacks 1 time in the past 5 years.

I concur that Matthews and Perry would not be overpaid ... if they reached double digits in sacks.

Heh heh, hoping this is the year they both return to double-digit sacks!   A little health, a little secondary, a little offense (so that opponents are playing catchup rather than sitting on leads and trying to run out clock), and a little pressure up the middle could all work together to help make that so.

Everything is going to fall together this year, why not hope for the best, at least for now?  :):):):)

Perry and Matthews both would have had 10 sacks last year if our secondary was capable of covering receivers longer than 1.7 seconds.

Somebody PLEASE post that gif of Matthews getting to the Vikings QB in like 2 seconds flat only for the QB to complete a pass.

Nevermind.  I'll do it myself.

Who was that in coverage? 28. I cant read the name.

Pretty sure it was Hawkins.  That clip is one of the biggest reasons I didn't mind cutting him.  Instead of trying to tackle the receiver, he's complaining about pass interference that didn't happen (or trying to suggest he didn't interfere) without even knowing the receiver caught the ball.

I mean that was really good coverage, Keenum just chucked it up for grabs and WR won. The hope is this year that even if that isn't a sack, it's a pick for King, Tramon, Alexander or Jackson.

I’m going to challenge the bold statement. Matthews isn’t the issue, Matthews’ contract isn’t the issue either. He played very well last season... I want GB to resign him to a reasonable deal this coming offseason.

The issue is management continues to make him the top option for pass rush. The last 2 years GB has spent both 1st and 2nd picks on secondary players at the expense of the front seven talent. Heck the highest players GB has drafted to that position lately are Fackrell and Biegel. It will continue to be an issue until management addresses it.

I said this past offseason it’s going to take a draft where they draft one in the 1st and 3rd to inject new talent. I wouldn’t be surprised with the extra first next draft if we take an edge in the 1st then in the 2nd.

Dont blame Matthews... right now in his career he should be the 2nd or 3rd option as the older, edge specialist. GB hasn’t allowed it.

Ok.  So which corner are you willing to give up?  Are you giving up on Kevin King in favor of TJ Watt?  Or are you giving up Jaire Alexander and the NO' 19 1st for Marcus Davenport?  And once you get past the first round or so of pass rushers, the quality of pass rushers goes down tremendously.  I mean, the only ones you might be able to argue are Aren Key and Lorenzo Carter.  The year before isn't much better about getting a pass rusher in the 2nd round.  Grabbing a pass rusher in the 2nd round isn't likely to amount to much.  Pass rushers go early and often.

I agree. Matthews should be a No. 2 or 3 guy. I don't know if Matthews agrees though. I'd be fine with an extension, but you can't overpay him, he's not the dominant 2010 Matthews anymore.

Not to rehatch this argument as we've done 100 times now, but this was the easy decision IMO. For the last few years, the FA market has been flooded with CB talent with almost no EDGE talent those same years. GB should have landed Watt (and Lawson while they were at it) and looked to FA for a CB instead of King. You still could have gone CB in rounds 2, 3 or 4 last year. Sometimes you cannot be so narrow-focused to only look at the draft prospects, but also must ask "what other avenues are available to address this position and what is available?" The answer was address CB in FA and go high at EDGE in the draft.
