He travels with the team and practices with the team today but is suddenly suspended for "violation of athletic department policy".

squire12
Quote Welcome back everyone! As is tradition, we start the 2018-19 Champ Check criteria the day after the Super Bowl. It's been a pretty fascinating season so far - on KenPom, Virginia/Duke/Gonzaga have separated themselves from the back, while a strong second tier of MSU/Tennessee/Michigan/UNC/Virginia Tech/Kentucky lingers behind. Determining who's going to win it this year is going to be fun, especially with there being a glut of teams with 5+ losses in the KP top 20. Could be some R32/S16 fun. Anyway, the traditional criteria: A one, two or three seed (because we don't know the bracket yet, we're continuing Pete's tradition of conservatively using the AP Top 20) Member of a Power conference: ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10 or SEC (only one "mid-major" has won since 1990 UNLV, which was 2014 UConn. Similarly to Gonzaga, you could make an argument against their status as a mid-major.) Either went to the previous year’s dance or have an All-American Led by a coach with more than five tourney trips and at least one Elite Eight run Averaging more than 73 points per game Allowing fewer than 73 points per game An average scoring margin of at least seven points per game A schedule among the 75 strongest in the country on KenPom Villanova qualified for all of these last year, so make that 19 of the last 20 champions that's met the criteria. For 2018-19 to date, the teams that qualify: Tennessee, Duke, Michigan State, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Villanova. Virginia is averaging 72.9 PPG, so with one good performance, they'd be on this list. Now, the analytics criteria. First, the numbers, with a small adjustment after last year: every champion but 2014 UConn has possessed at least a 113.9 AdjOE and 96 AdjDE. Now that Ken has a ratings archive on his website that will give you ratings on any day in history up to early 2002, I was able to go back and confirm/deny the old criteria. It turns out that the non-UConn low wasn't 112.2 under Ken's new calculations, but 113.9, by 2003 Syracuse. Even 2013 Louisville got to 114.4. As such, your qualifiers this year in both: Virginia, Duke, Gonzaga, Michigan State, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Kentucky, Iowa State, Louisville, Nevada, and Maryland. The other half also comes with a small adjustment: your offense must be at least in the top 20 of KenPom's AdjOE rankings (2014 UConn, again, the only exception in the last 21 seasons) and your defense in the top 40 (every champion has met this criteria). Teams meeting both: Virginia, Duke, Gonzaga, Michigan State, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Kentucky, Iowa State, and Louisville. Teams that meet all three criteria to be your 2018-19 Champion: Duke, Michigan State, North Carolina, Kentucky Teams meeting two of three criteria: Tennessee, Virginia, Gonzaga, Virginia Tech, Iowa State, Louisville Wild cards: Villanova, Nevada, Maryland Hope this serves as a good starter pack for college basketball thoughts, and, personally, it's a surprise to see four teams meet all the criteria right now. We'll see how it unfolds! Some other interesting information to consider. Based on the info in the quote above, the 6 teams that meet the criteria to win the title are: Duke, UNC, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mi State and Texas Tech Teams that have the adjusted Ken Pom criteria Gonzaga 1 Virginia 1 Tennessee 2 Michigan St. 2 Marquette 5 Duke 1 North Carolina 1 Houston 3 Kentucky 2 Michigan 2 Virginia Tech 4 Teams that have the Ken Pom rankings Gonzaga 1 Virginia 1 Tennessee 2 Michigan St. 2 Purdue 3 Duke 1 North Carolina 1 Virginia Tech 4 Kentucky 2 Michigan 2 Buffalo
