The Official Derek Carr Thread

It can be both. Gruden is leaving a lot to be desired as a play caller. But that doesn't excuse happy feet and his total lack of pocket presence or willing to extend a play with his feet.

Gruden's great for the first drive or two where he can script his plays. We're just terrible after that because he sucks at making adjustments and his offense is outdated.

The biggest issue is out schemes suck. Offense is always shaky, we can blame Carr are you want but I don’t trust Gruden. Our defense always looks a step too slow, instead of flying round making plays. We don’t have a way to generate a pass rush. Mayowa is our best pass rusher, a guy we signed for peanuts

Looking at offenses around the league, our scheme is extremely outdated. Everyone around the league is implementing spread concepts while we're using max protection / a west coast scheme because it was mildly successful for Gruden in the mid-2000s.

And the defensive issues have been known for a while now, it doesn't matter how good your DB's are, if you can't consistently generate pressure with your front 4 they're going to get cooked. It also doesn't help that we refuse to address the LB spot and run with fringe roster players / washed vets with no legs underneath them and zero chance to cover RB's/Slot WR/TE's.

Are we using max protect because of Carr having hapy feet, Gruden not being able to adapt, or both?

Completely agree with the defensive problems.  That is on Gruden 100%.  Pagano was turning the D around and would have had us as a top 10 unit.  We went from 1.4 sacks a game and 25 points a game to 2.8 sacks a game and 21 points allowed.  Yards allowed we went from 29th to 11th.  That is without an off-season to implement his defense.  That was my first red flag and I am still pissed off about it.  Guenther is suppose to be a good coordinator but why switch when someone is making progress like that.

I have been wondering how much autonomy does Gruden give Carr during the scripted period? You hear Gruden and Del Rio both say that they call for deep shots during the game but Carr does not take the chance.  I have to ignore the fact that maybe nothing was available for the sake of argument.  Do you remember that almost every game we played back in the day on the first drive the QB would would always drop back and just throw it over everyone's heads.  I do not remember any of those passes ever being caught but the announcer would always say something about us being willing to go deep, putting the D on it's heels, or keeping the defense honest.

Facts... I think the most important move this offseason is getting a good OC. We don’t even have a chance with this scheme

You are aware that all those men and have individual identities and while may have coached under Gruden, may have elevated themselves since that time. They might have added to, subtracted from the orginal concepts to modernize their scheme to todays NFL.

Where is Gruden scheming up plays like this today?
