A long time ago. It's just not true that they don't hold value. Contributors on rookie deals are super valuable.

But drafting that late in the first round, you're more likely to get a bust than a contributor.  If you're lucky, you get a rotational player that late in the draft.  If you get a team who prefers cap space or needs to stay under the luxury tax, that pick is more valuable as a trade chip.

Getting good role players on cheap contracts is huge. How many teams who constantly dump 1st round picks stay competitive? I love the way Denvers roster is set up, but they're looking very New Orleans esque right now where they tried to compete way to quickly and never added those cheap rotational players. This is a huge reason New Orleans could never field a championship contender around AD. They traded 1sts for role players at the deadline every year.

So Kawhi's deal is a two plus one deal...Which obviously makes a lot of sense.

I thought he would sign this exact deal...........Only with the Raptors lol.

Not surprised he took a 2+1 deal.  Should have been the deal that Paul George should have taken as well if he was going to maximize his career earnings.

I still love how Cris Carter was swearing up and down that he was getting direct information from Kawhi's camp but every single thing he said was wrong. One night he hinted Kawhi was returning to Toronto, the next morning it was the Lakers, then he declared Kawhi wouldn't announce on the 5th (he did), and he also said Kawhi wasn't considering a short term deal anywhere (he signs one).
