This has nothing to do with the mandate to get under the luxury tax threshold or rumors that Sox ownership is being cheap. That’s BS. It’s the fact that Betts refuses to sign any extension and is dead set on testing free agency. With that, the Red Sox have to move him; instead of letting him walk for practically nothing. Verdugo would be a great get. He turned down $200 mil which is a ton but still well below what’d he get on the market. Sounds like a situation where it’s a fair offer but they knew he’d likely turn it down. Now they can say he declined an extension to ease the blowback. He also said he wouldn't guarantee that he'd sign his counter offer of $420 million, even if it was presented in front of him.

I was looking an article from last year and forgot its 2020. https://www.google.com/amp/s/syndication.bleacherreport.com/amp/2826774-mookie-betts-rejected-red-sox-new-contract-offer-last-year-will-revisit-in-fa.amp.html
NVRamsFan
I’d rather put those players to a Bryant or Arenado trade especially with the rumors about Betts’ contract demands.
