Chargers DE Melvin Ingram sitting out of practices; wants new contract

Maybe give him a one year extension and guarantee some of his salary, spreading it over two years. I like this Melvin more than the one last season. He’s a good to very good player. But he’s also 31 and I don’t know if he’s worth hanging onto for much longer.

Makes sense for him to do so. His salary isn’t guaranteed and we’ve already seen guys getting hurt. If he gets hurt, he ruins his last significant contract opportunity. He just saw his teammate get $11m more/season... he knows they’ve got a rookie QB they’re not paying and it makes sense that he would be interested in getting some guaranteed cash thrown his way, just in case things don’t go as planned this season. Absolutely can't hate this move on his part.

The bolded pretty much sums it up.

He's 31 years old and is set to make 14M this year in salary with zero guaranteed money on his contract but he doesn't get paid his salary amount if the season is cancelled/injured which would leave him with nothing since he chose to NOT opt out.

Edit: If the season is cancelled, current contracts continue into next year (where there would be a MUCH lower cap) and players like him, at the age of 32, would immediately become a cap casualty.

Sounds like he doesn't care to participate in Training Camp to me. No way he's missing game checks. Zero!

This.  The writing is pretty much on the wall that he isn't getting a new contract, particularly one adjusted for inflation (i.e. an increased figure over his previous deal), that money went to Bosa.  He won't "hold out" into actual games because he's playing for his next contract with whatever team opts to pay him on the open market next March.  Sort of a win/win situation anyway, since it allows Melvin to preserve his body for said contract season ahead and allows the guy who is most likely to replace him (barring the Chargers drafting someone high in 2021 at the position - which you can't rule out because, despite the glaring need, Tom Telesco has a clear aversion to spending premium picks on a LOT), Uchenna Nwosu, more reps in training camp.

I am pretty sure they can fine the crap out of you under the new CBA... like insane level fines.

  • Fines are mandatory ((you can't waive them at the end like in the past)
  • Fines are larger (can't find specifics on this)  -- Update: Its 50k a day now
    • previously it was 40k per day

Also you should never underestimate the greed of an NFL football player when faced with only making 10-15 million a year. See LeVeon Bell.

Chargers just need to transition that money from non guaranteed to guaranteed he is set to be there this year and the cap is the same just pay him or put in there 7 mil guaranteed only for injury so that way he is at least some what comfortable if he goes down with an injury. At 31 he is basically looking for one last small pay day that will get him like Addison got with the bills problem is he is risking not only that 14 mil but that extra small deal that can extend his career if he goes down with a significant  injury.

He’s technically there so he hasn’t been fined yet.

Apparently that's what they did. They guaranteed his 2020 salary.
