not really true. around a 1/4 of teh guys in the top 50 prospects were drafted between picks 31-95ish. you can get really talented players there. so why give that up if youre only signing an above average veteran starter at an inflated cost?

The average net value is around $5 million for a second round pick and $1.3 million for a third round pick, circa 2013.

even if i cared about arbitrary #s like that, you missed the point. joey votto was a 2nd round pick, you give up that pick and you lose a chance to find a player like that. make sense?

It doesn't matter though.  The Orioles have a 0.3% chance of winning the World Series.

I'm not advocating for the move.  I was simply pointing out the fallacy in GSUeagles's statement that a prospective team would be overpaying for an average starter.  They would in fact almost surely be acquiring above average production for well under what should be market value.

It's to the point now where even a tanking team is better off front loading decent veterans like a Neil Walker or Jonathan Lucroy on a 2 year + club option type deal with the plan of trading them halfway through. You might be able to get those guys with a $5-8M salary in year 2 and have a club option after. That's valuable.

1. Neil Walker, 2B, free agent — The Royals were unsuccessful in trying to bring Walker aboard. His asking price was too high. The Royals were hoping to bring in Walker on a minor league deal, with the chance to make the big club.

Why on earth would Walker do that?

The A's should really make a one year move on one of the pitchers. Offer them something with a player option and a cheap opt out for a second year. Gives those pitchers a chance to rebuild some value pitching in Oakland. Plus the A's payroll is a joke at this point. I love the youth movement but you gotta spend somewhere. Surprised we haven't tried to give Luc a decent offer for the short term.

Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that Keon Broxton is drawing more trade interest from teams than Domingo Santana.

Santana's name has been mentioned often as a potential trade piece, especially after the Brewers traded for Christian Yelich and signed Lorenzo Cain. However, Haudricourt hears that Broxton is the one clubs are asking about more because he's cheaper, has speed, can play center field and has an option remaining. Broxton is a career .226/.317/.422 hitter but was a 20/20 player last season, and his power/speed combo would make him interesting again in fantasy if he's dealt somewhere where he has an easier path to playing time.
