Because the Front Office is stupid. And has stupidly tanked his trade value. And with letting Ioannidas and Settle go, they need Payne to play this year.

If they are going to trade him during the 2022 season, the best time to get good value for him is to wait until the year starts and then if a playoff hopeful team has a DT go down, they trade him then. Right now, if I'm another team, I'm not offering more than a 5th.

Even if your interested in already resigning him?

A) If you want to do the research, have at it.

B) Payne has value. How much is the big question. The biggest blow to his value came when we didn't pick up his option.

C) The question put to me is why aren't they trading him now (the compensation - little or a lot - wasn't placed as part of the question put to me). When we let Matt and Tim go and draft his replacement while also not picking up his 5th year, that kinda forces us to keep him unless we get an awesome trade offer. Hence, we boxed ourselves into having to keep him IMHO.

D) It's the best strategy we have now, yes. Which is why I pointed out that if we still wanted to trade him now is not the time to try to do it. You play him and then if anyone needs a DT in mid-season and are willing to pony up for him (and give him a new deal most likely) that is when you trade him. But as soon as we declined to pick up his 5th year, it was pretty much a done deal.

Problem is that this advice is about a year too late. He's on the last year of his contract after we declined to pick up the 5th year. If his agent tries to look for a trade, after FA and the draft have happened, we'd get peanuts for him. All of that put together means we need to keep him on the roster and play him this year.

Just want to clarify for the record that we didn’t decline his 5th-year option. He’s playing on it this year.

I'd like to see you provide a single historic comparable trade of a similar player to Payne getting a large compensation via trade. Teams don't trade for run stuffers on expiring deals.  Nothing they have done has impacted his trade value, because he never had any trade value. Getting another season of play out of him and then possibly recouping whatever comp pick from him leaving isn't stupid, its actually the best strategy they could of had with him. This isn't the same situation as Cousins and Scherff. Those players had actual value.

Richard Seymour? I probably spelled it wrong and I know he played DE/DT- but kind of similar.

He was a dominant pass rusher

It was the only one I could find too but I didn’t use it because like you said they’re such different players.

I know we traded a first for Dan Wilkerson but that was like 25 years ago

DaRon Payne is solid not outstanding. Definitely not worth the contract Jon Allen got.

Yet look at his numbers compared to Vita Vea and he got more then Allen so there’s that🤔🤔🤔 we can say he’s a run stuffer to devalue the player he is but the fact he pushes the pocket into the QB’s face constantly allows Allen and other guys to do their work. We think our LB’s suck now take this guy away from keeping them clean and then they will really suck. Payne is a hell and I mean hell of a football player. Our interior DL is our strength. We’re talking about not resigning this guy to keep Sweat and Chase when they are the two underperforming to their abilities is laughable. Payne and Allen have earned big money. Outside of a few flashes Sweat and Chase haven’t so I’m sorry Payne is a must sign.

The problem with Payne is the position. It’s not that he’s not a great player, bc he is but giving two DTs huge deals is just an unwise allocation of a teams cap space. I said it before they actually signed Jon Allen but knew they would and when they did that Payne would definitely not be re-signed here and if you want to build a balanced team with depth & good starters or stars throughout, not giving Payne a deal where he’s making $15-20 mil a year is the right move long term for the franchise.

Sweat & Chase are younger & play premium positions. They have time to develop & become good or great at their positions.
