Hollywood had 1,000 yards with the Ravens. Tyreek would have 1,200 minimum.

Since Lamar has taken over as QB, Ravens WR's have the least amount of catches and yards in the NFL. Yeah, Hollywood had a 1,000 yard year (mostly without Lamar) and then he went to the front office and demanded a trade because of our scheme!

How much is it scheme and how much has it been talent, in your opinion?

In recent years I feel like the Ravens haven't really addressed the position in any meaningful way outside of drafting Bateman and Brown. Most of the other WR additions have been mid/late rounders and washed Free Agents, no?

Will never forget, I was on vacation in upstate New York, checked my phone for sports news to shockingly learn Tyreek had been traded to the Dolphins.

Oh what a day. What a lovely day. <moviequote>

Where does one vacation in upstate NY? The Adirondacks?

Hard to really say who is the clear #1 between the top guys (Davante, JJ, Kupp, Hill, Diggs, Chase), but Hill certainly has as good an argument as any right now.

Worth noting Dolphins have been targeting their top WRs at an unprecedented rate. Time will tell if it’s a scheme/Mike McDanis thing, or just Waddle and Hill being that good that they’re getting open at unprecedented rates. Probably a mix of both.

Yes up near Lake Placid. Freaking every gas station had Bills flags for sale. Even in northern Pennsylvania, a state that has the Steelers and Eagles. Hmph.

Remember the storyline back then. "Tyreek will never put up numbers with Tua." Hmmmm

In my opinion it's a mix of scheme, coaching, talent and also just Lamar. Until this past year the team had invested 2 first-round picks, a handful of mid-round picks and some free agent acquisitions to get Lamar guys on the outside so IMO I don't think that's an issue. Now, this year is completely different and I 100% put this year on the FO because they chose to ignore WR at every opportunity.

So...

  • Scheme: It's well-known that Roman's scheme is not WR-friendly. It's a run-first offense where passing concepts come second and the routes often end up on top of each other because the passing game takes a back seat to the run game. Guys like Steve Smith, Hollywood Brown and numerous other WR's have been pretty outspoken about Roman's system, and even analysts have exhaustively detailed his passing concepts and how lackluster they are, to go with the sheer amount of opportunities potential WR's have in this system. Lastly, it's well-documented how many times we see receivers running routes in that end up on top of each other. The lack of details in our passing game shines constantly.
  • Coaching: Despite drafting lots of WR's over the years, virtually none of them outside of Hollywood have panned out in the slightest. It's become a running joke with our franchise where a young drafted WR will show out in camp/preseason then disappear in the regular. From Chris Moore to James Proche to Tylan Wallace, the list extends back to Joe Flacco's hand-picked WR Tandon Doss. We simply never see improvement or development from our drafted receivers. Furthermore, did you see how many times last night Lamar was rushing to get guys lined up correctly? It's week 9 and this offense can't line up correctly on like 20% of our plays.
  • Talent: Kind of goes hand-in-hand with coaching. The talent at the WR position always seems to be lacking no matter who is out there. Is it because the players just suck? Is it bad coaching? Who knows...
  • Lamar: The last piece of this puzzle is Lamar himself. Lamar does not thrive throwing the ball outside the numbers, primarily because his accuracy there is just not what you would expect from a top 5 QB. Our run game creates A LOT of traffic in the middle of the field, so outside WR's are almost always single covered, yet Lamar routinely has a hard time throwing out there. Additionally, Lamar's accuracy deep is lackluster as well. Last night is a small sample size but kind of highlights Lamar's issues as a passer. Several instances of missing WR's deep, several instances of missing wide open receivers crossing his face only to force a pass to a covered TE. So even when Roman's system does create an open WR, Lamar has a habit of tunnel-visioning the TE's over the middle of the field instead of going through his progressions and finding the open guy.

In conclusion: It's everything.

Tyreek is the one WR in the NFL who can definitely make the most out of nothing. He can take it to the house on a 3 yard curl
