What a statement it would be if Payton chooses to work with Kyler Murray instead of Russell Wilson considering the defense and ST Denver has in comparison. LOL

I'd rather work with Arizona's ownership structure than Denver's tbh.

2009-2010 Josh McDaniels - **** coach but ownership thought he was a good hire.

John Fox 2011-2014, 4 Straight division titles wasn't good enough (granted SB loss was on him but still)

Gary Kubiak, 2015-2016, This was a medical retirement but still.

Vance Joeseph - 2017-2018, Not a good coach but two bad years and he's done (More on elway not finding a QB)

Vic Fangio - 2019-2021, 3 seasons and not much to show for it, again more on Elway but I'll give them credit for this firing.

Nathaniel Hackett , 2022- 2022. - This was 100% on Hackett but again, ownership has hired 6 going on 7 coaches this decade with only two seeing major success (See Peyton, granted 2015 was more Kubiak than Peyton) Even with a talented QB from Elway.....yeah he deserved to be fired.

Broncos Ownership's only legitimate success this decade has been with Peyton and that's it.

You realize the Broncos ownerhsip... isn't the ownership that hired literally any of those coaches right? The Bowlens hired Hackett and the Walton's bought the team months later and then fired him months after that when he failed pretty spectacularly. This is their first hiring cycle.

The ownership issues since Joe Ellis took over for an ailing Bowlen are very legit.   But in this case, the DEN ownership hasn't even offered anyone a 2nd interview.   In both CAR & DEN's case, they had a 1st interview, and moved on either because the pick price, or the control Payton wanted, they're passing.

Payton wants to control the narrative - but just last week, Payton was "really impressed with the DEN ownership"...as per the Saints beat reporter <not Stevens>.   So this is just spin as he's no longer the frontrunner.  And before you cite the story that DEN was all-in - that was refuted right away by beat & national reporters.

DEN definitely was very interested - but the price / power requests in all likelihood drove them away.  As it did CAR.   DEN's decision to organize zero 2nd interviews with candidates, even though Payton, Shaw, Quinn, Evero & Caldwell all could have interviewed - is telegraphing they've locked into Ryans as their top candidate.    Similarly, CAR's decision coming out today came without a 2nd interview with Payton, so it's more likely they weren't willing to pay NO's price, being intra-division.

To be clear, Wilson definitely should give prospective HC's pause.   And Payton is an excellent HC, in a vacuum.   But the pick price and the control demands are definitely an issue with a guy who's shown he'll bolt when the butcher's bill comes due.   If ARI is willing to pay the picks and cede him control - no hard feelings.    But it's not because Payton declined other places, both CAR & DEN decided to move on given the cost/risk of bolting soon.

Frankly, it wouldn't surprise to see Payton in the booth again next year.  I think that's the most likely outcome at this stage.  You've got a find an org that's willing to pay the picks AND cede control to him, along with Payton wanting to go there.   That's a tough match to find.
